We only have one season of knife or death here but have watched it twice!

It was!  That too was gone in 60 seconds! :D

Day 29

(Image removed from quote.)
I noticed a good variety of sweets in this challenge, but am trying my hardest to refrain from getting any.
Since the weight loss challenge last year, I manage to put some of those pounds back, and am planning to cut back a little to trim myself down a little.

For the big finale, are you planning on punching through drywall?   :pok:  :woohoo:
    That would be one of the most daredevil things ever done on a challenge... :bnghd: >:D

A busy day in central London today so a brief visit to compliment y'awl on getting this far  :tu:
I went to check on the progress of the chilli plants and the Ghost is coming along well
The garden needs a good watering but, as I have been well watered  :drink: it'll have to be tomorrow

I had to give up extremely hot peppers a few years ago. Even moderately hot peppers can cause issues with my digestive tract nowadays, particularly on the day after consumption

Almost done with this somewhat uncomfortable challenge.  The MP600 will never be a favorite but in most cases it will get the job done.  The fundamental things apply as time goes by.

Day 30

And here we are at the end of the challenge, a mighty fine one at that, thank you for organising comis :salute:

Looking forward to the magnet, great design as always :like: :tu: don’t remember seeing the badge design but think there were enough of us to qualify?
 :dunno:

Hammerhead acquitted itself pretty well, tried everything apart from the can opener and all was quite usable, notably the saw was far better than I expected. Would I swap it for my normal Spirit or Rebar, unlikely, but if it was all that was available I now know I’d cope…something a bit different which was the point of the challenge

:tu: Hammerhead  you done well son!

Well, there you have it. 30 days with the Flik. I was not expecting my mind to be changed, and it has not, for the most part.

I made a slight modification to the bottle opener profile, and now, when opened with the small flathead, the two can accommodate the square-hole bit adapter. This expanded the Flik's usefulness immensely. Gerber sold their own version of this bit adapter. Why not be able to use it by default? It took so little effort to do this, that it could have been a feature. Open both flatheads, put the bit adapter on there. It fits well enough to be used. There is no reason for the flathead to have that little belly by default. It still opens bottles perfectly well after my mod.

Ergonomics are still average at best. I am a little used to handling the tool, but ergonomics are not good.
Opening the pliers with a Flik of the wrist never got old. SNAP! Pliers. Well, there is the extra step of spreading the handles to get the pliers to shift position and create splay, but still. Oho pliers are nice, and the pliers themselves are nice. And retracting them got better. They used to get jammed all the time when being retracted. Now I can press the buttons and retract the pliers quite reliably. They do jam on me on occasion, but this is not as big a problem now. Still not a fan of the issue being there, though.

The scissors I cannot forgive. They do not even cut paper that well. I cannot believe just how bad they are. Fiskars owns Gerber, and the Flik was an expensive, premium, top of the line offering. Very few tools in my collection have worse scissors than the Flik.

The saw is terrible. Thick, bent out-of-the-box, with tiny teeth. It clogs, it binds, and it even scrapes the frame when being folded.

The can opener should have been omitted. Having it was just wishful thinking. It does not open cans effectively. Not if you want to eat the food afterwards. And it took valuable space. The Phillips could have been squared, instead of being flattened.

The blades are sharp, and I especially like the serrated blade, but again, why are there issues where there should not be? The unsharpened heels on the blades are three times as long as they should have been. And this was to reduce accidents? Why not just fix the thumb-holes? Gerber makes a ton of folding knives with thumb-holes. Why did the Flik get the short straw? This is probably the thing that baffles me the most.

Another weird thing is having to push the locking tabs back, to lift the short implements, and expose their nail-nicks. Why not just have the implements sit a little higher and have the nail-nicks already exposed? The Leatherman Free series and Roxon Phantom and Flash have their implements completely flush, but on all those, this serves ergonomics, plus it is easy to deploy the implements with one hand. On the Flik, it does not matter. The ergonomics are already sub-par. Having the implements flush serves no purpose, and the extra step to partially deploy them does not allow one-handed use anyway, so what's the point?

Conclusion
I do not know what the conclusion is. I still disagree with many of the choices made with the Flik. If this was done differently, it might have stayed in production. I do not really recommend it, because it frustrates me to see such an ambitious design receive such poor implementation.
I do not regret spending a month with it. I managed to modify it to accept the Ganzo bit adapter, and this alone is a massive plus. I doubt I'll add it to my edc rotation, but at least it is a little more useful now. If you have one already, take a Dremel, grind the belly off the bottle opener, and enjoy driving standard bits.

 :pok:
OK Steve in the name of science :pok: or something

As all my cans have ring pulls so had to turn it over. This disadvantages the Hammerhead as the lip on the can is a little smaller, however have tested other MT’s this way so a level playing field in that regard

Conclusion: not great but doable, both the tool itself and the handles feel too long and kept folding up

Had to give up two thirds in and was getting a bit painful to use and slipped a lot…but if it’s all you had you wouldn’t starve…give me a SAK opener any day, but no surprise there

Hammerhead over and out :tu:

Thanks RP  :tu:
Probably the weakest tool of the lot, but a couple surprised me, the saw as I said above but also both blades (after a sharpen of the main blade) and the bottle opener was really good
Overall ergonomics aren't great as the hammerhead gets in the way, but considering I thought it'd be pretty hopeless, I've actually come away with new found respect for it

Daredevil Day 30!  We made it!    :salute:

Final pic for cody6268.  I have to take my wife to the eye doc today, so I doubt there will be any use.

Final thoughts on the Swiss+Tech 13 in 1:
It’s neither as good as I had hoped, nor as bad as I feared.
-I started to take it apart to smooth the blade swing and had to stop for lack of proper bits.  However, it was smoother after I did this.
-When I started taking it apart, I found the cause of its major weakness.  There is a pivot screw for blades, and two smaller ones at the other end.  The pins are held in place only by spring pressure.  The scales are thin.  Any torque on the tool, i.e. using screwdrivers, puts stress on the scales and pins, and it feels as though the tool will fail.  That doesn’t mean you can’t turn screws or pry with it, but I’d say it’s light duty.
-File works well enough on either side, but there is no way to use it as a metal saw.
-Center tool clumping is a pain.  If you want something other than the knife or file, you’re going to be separating all three center tools.
-Lack of scissors and awl is a problem for me.

Day 30 of 30

:woohoo: Finally finished! I had bought the Gerber Suspension NXT a while back and never really carried it ::) I figured this challenge wpuld be a great chance to force me to carry it and see what it could do :salute: while not being the best tool, it is usable  It didn't break on me and that is always a plus  I did find a few highlights on this tool, the awl is pretty good as is the Phillips and scissors :salute: although the pliers are springy, I used them fine :tu: The other tools are on par with Gerbers stubby tools but still worked okish ;) the combo blade is still.my nemesis though :ahhh

Overall a not bad tool :tu: I will just be glad not to have to carry it for a while though  :D
