Day 28
Carrying the mighty 111mm Outrider again today.
(Image removed from quote.)
Awesome picture.  Bends the mind a little.

Day 28

Hercules helps feeding the children
Nice use.  As innocent a use as it is thar picture just seems unsettling to me, it has to be the red.

Day 28

Scissors come in handy.
Great use.  I’ve never had Palm sugar

Day 28:

Carrying my OHO Sentinel today, but slapped those Meton Boss scales on it. Used it to cut a sandwich before heading to work tonight.

Awesome scales.  He makes some really nice ones.

Day 22

Outrider for a seaside picknick
Gorgeous view and pic.  I definitely would have preferred that to the snow that is still on the ground here

My eyes and that picture were messing with my head until I looked closer at it.

I saw a sandwich with green mold around it in a plastic bag.  I was like, why is Nix showing us a moldy sandwich and I sure hope he didn’t eat it.  Then I thought about the movie Troll 2 and was like I really hope he didn’t eat it.

Dinner again and I switched back to the Hunter to slice up some poblano peppers to put in with rice and a cilantro sauce.  Turned out to be a nice side.  The tomatoes are to garnish grilled chicken.

Who is going to carry their 111 regularly beyond this challenge?  Anyone going to expand on their collection?  I really like the ones I presently have, and would like to give the Workchamp a try EDC wise on a longer term basis.  I think it would team up with my Exec and/or an Opinel very well.  From the very limited experience I've had with it, and the 111's in general, it seems they're built to be virtually indestructible.  The backspring lockup on the screwdrivers on the Workchamp lock up like a vault, as does the blade.  The RAF Hunter is a real joy to carry, and I really learned to respect that belt cutter.  It worked superbly as a small blade, saving the large blade for other tasks.  The saws on both models need no more praise other than I like having the extra length when it comes time to use them.  Makes cutting larger pieces of wood for the campfire a lot easier!  The great thing about both of mine is they have the toothpick and tweezers.  I learned just how hardy the pliers are for tasks a bit bigger than the tweezers can handle.  I even learned that the pliers on my Swisschamp can handle tasks bigger than I thought when they assisted the Workchamp on a job.  Just some ramblings :D
Like I wrote earlier in the Challenge, I don't know why I didn't jump on the 111 knives sooner!

I won't carry a 111mm regularly after the challenge... but like you I really wish I jumped into the 111mm pool much sooner.   My first SAK was a Tinker small... and I wish my second was an Adventurer.  That would have changed my young life.  I'm going to get an Adventurer soon... just because.

I think my carry will be much the same going forward... a 111mm when I go outdoors (though the meaning of outdoors will loosen, I think)

Day 28: Some preventative maintenance!

Great job! My current glasses are giving me a pain in the rear. The left lens keeps popping out; which I don't get--I have a roughly 6-year-old frame from the same brand (Twistoflex) that has only rarely needed repair. Thus, it's pretty much mandatory that when I'm not carrying a Pocket Toolchest or an older LM (all having on-board small slotted screwdrivers), I absolutely have to have a micro SD in the corkscrew on a SAK. The last one had actually been poorly machined by the company who cuts the lenses for my optometrist, and I got a new lens under warranty. I suspect it's due to many factors; most likely, due to how thin the actual frames are, and the fact the lens is thicker to fit the curvature of the frame. I'm thinking this time just get a new frame.Probably something in the prescription safety line that is hard to break; and also less expensive.

Think I will be carrying 111’s in the great outdoors as well in future, where in the past most likely a huntsman or farmer/FX, the adventurer has been much easier on the pocket than I was expecting, having the large blade is great

I say that as I’ve really enjoyed this challenge but the huntsman/FX have more tools for similar weight so really it’s going to depend on the circumstance.

Overall It’s the outrider that’s most impressed me, bit much in the pocket of my shorts over summer, but in jeans and a jacket at other times can see it being carried often.

If I was to get another it’d be the work champ but tbh once I’m getting up to carrying 220gm (or whatever it actually is) then think I might as well take the spirit instead with a smaller SAK for better blade selection.

After this challenge it would feel crazy not to at least think about a 111 when I’m choosing for the day, trip or whatever

I will, for sure.  I selected them as my work knives long ago.   The Dual Pro X is my favorite knife by far that I've tried with dual one-hand opening plain-edge and blunt-tip serrated blades. Most of mine have layouts specifically chosen for work tasks.  The Outrider is a bit heavy, but I still carry it a lot (even though I have the same toolset in 84mm and 91mm).  I'm actually first of next month, buying myself an OH Dual Grip Alpineer and maybe a Sentinel Clip as well. And expand my two-hand opener selection of 111mm. The blades come to more of a point, and they are slimmer; and require a narrower belt sheath. The opening hole adds a lot to the width of a sheathed SAK.  The GAK I got from you some time before the challenge is my primary work knife, due to the thicker liners (perhaps the Germans required this?); since they don't bend when you drop the knife. That's the one case I have for slide-locks as well. The lock may not be as strong, but you get decent liners on those knives.

I really like the 111mm series. I have a Garant and really like this 2-layer model. I could see getting a Picnicker (PE) as a back-up. However, I also really like the Trekker and Rucksack. That woodsaw layer adds little width and weight, but provides a lot of utility. A big Camper.

Regardless....the Outrider is my favorite model in the 111mm line-up. It is slightly....ever so slightly...on the big side, but that size is worth it to have some scissors in hand. I have both the side lock and the liner lock versions of the Outrider. I think both are excellent, but marginally prefer the liner lock.

For this challenge I've been carrying the Hercules. I really like this knife and it has been easier to carry than I expected. However.....I think it is a bit big. I'll probably carry it for specific activities: fishing, camping, hiking. I love the little pliers, but I don't use them frequently. For EDC....I think I'll be more likely to carry the Outrider or Rucksack.

I think a nice carry combination might be a Classic along with a Rucksack. That would give one a small and large blade, large saw and small scissors. Good openers and an awl. Plus a little nail file.

So, yes!  The 111mm will be features regularly in my EDC!   :tu:

I’ve used my 111’s quite a bit before this challenge, BUT... I never really carried the Hercules. It sat next to my bed for when I needed a tool upstairs.

But this challenge has shown me I can carry it at work (using the Nite I’ve Hip Clip) and not even notice it’s there!!

I want to buy a couple more 111's to add to the collection, but I doubt I will ever carry them on any sort of a regular basis.

111s are good knives to use, but I won’t be carrying them around any time soon due to the legal position in the UK, as I’m sure my fellow Brits will agree. I’ve particularly enjoyed using the Locksmith, it’s just a shame I’ve found a use for that large metal saw beyond a bit of nail filing so far this month!
