I will not be adding the P38. I do not want to pay the insane prices they're asking on ebay for a P38 and P51. Neither do I want to get ten-packs of both. I would like to test them eventually for my can opener thread, but we'll see.

I think a P38 here costs about $0.50 here. Shoot me your address and I'll send one to you. I'll have to list the price as $1 on the customs paperwork because that is the smallest dollar amount allowed on the form.

Glad to help the Can Opener thread.

Also.....there is a morale/comfort factor to being able to have a hot meal. A warm meal is usually appreciated.

During Desert Storm, troops wanted more meals that tasted good cold (well.....desert room temp). Several menu changes were made because of that experience.   :tu:

I can understand that.  During the time I spent over their, the last thing I want was a hot meal.  I really appreciated my insulated water bottle when I could fill it with any ice cold beverage.

cooking (heating) is just for taste
I believe cooking can improve the nutritional value of some foods and reduce it for others.  :dunno:
But I guess MREs have already been cooked? so this doesn't apply to them.

Here's my Keto MRE. No cooking required. 20g of carbs.
Now with updated menu. Look no further!

Very happy with it now. I am pleased with the variety considering the restrictions. :D
I got cheese, new protein bar, no sketchy sugar alcohols, no bulky, fragile pork rind bags, and filled with low carb goodness!

Should be good to go. I think I only need to post a picture of it packed, right?

You must be able to get them from an army surplus store in Oz? Sure they'll cost more than 50c but the shipping will be much less.

We have them here:

and what I used to use back in the day:

Cooking does effect nutritional value of some foods, but my understanding is because MREs are already cooked the heating doesn’t impact the nutrition.

How about Australian FREDs?  They are similar to P-38/P-51s, just a little longer due to the spoon end.

I'd rather put a Cadet in the MRE.

Yup the last link I posted. I know I have one or two somewhere but don't think I have seen them for a decade or two.
They were issued with our Rat Packs (NZ Army).

I managed to get my hands on a few a couple years ago.  I know Marble now makes one.  It was a small but useful design.

In putting together my MRE curiosity got the better of me today and I had to do a little test.

I don’t know how easy to come by they are other places, but here microwaveable food cups are really easy to come by.  I’ve seen them with Mac&Cheese, cereal, oatmeal, brownies, muffins, etc.  The local grocery store even has Keto ones if I remember correctly and some convenience stores carry them.

These seem like a perfect minimal prep hot foods, provided you have access to a microwave.  For this challenge, despite being allowed use of a microwave, it has to be able to be dome over a camp stove.  That is where the curiosity came in.

I happened to have a Kodiak brownie cup, so I decided to try.
- Rubbed a thin layer of cooking oil on the inside of a small titanium cup.  Pour in the powder from the cup and mix with water.  I used a hexamine tablet, set lower than normal for more distance from flame.  I stirred the contents of the cup to prevent burning until it looked done.

It may not have looked li,e a brownie, but it tasted like one so I would call it a success.

The only thing in a US MRE that needs 'cooking' are the hot beverages. Everything else can be eaten cold, straight out of the packaging.

My brother was in the army. He didn't even bother 'cooking' his instant coffee: he'd just pour the powder into his mouth, often between lip and gum, and let the goodness soak right in.

( See...? It runs in the family.....  )
Great experiment! A 2007 MRE!

Great view! And the MRE looked tasty for me. Tabasco always help.

About coffee... I used to mix instant coffee with powder milk and a very small amout of water. Just to made small balls. And I ate It during the hikes or night travels...
Just to have some of the magic of the coffee

Cheese update:

No oil or grease separation. No sign of spoilage. Smelled good.....

Tasted good. Tangy & salty. I don't think it has dried out at all. Adventure Boy declared it adventure worthy so far.   :tu:

I don’t know about eating small coffee balls, but espresso beans taste good to chew on, especially if chocolate covered.

Well, I returned the Quest bars to Coles.
Because I found them elsewhere for a dollar cheaper! And three more flavours!
And cookies and peanut butter cups! :like:
The cups only have 1g of carbs per pair! :woohoo:

omg those peanut butter cups are so delicious! :like:
I'll add a pack to my MRE and take out the McDonalds butter. Why do I have butter? I don't have bread or crackers or anything else for it. But peanut butter cups, now we're talking! And they're the same carbs as the butter, just 1 gram!

But I won't update anything now, in case I find another good item in a couple days. :D

I still can't believe how tasty those cups are. I'll go again and clear out the shop. And go to the second shop they have in the shopping centre and clear that shelf too. And 1 gram of carbs for two cups?  :gimme:

My instant meal with self heating pad has finally arrived, and since I really haven't got a chance to eat anything the whole day(been a long, hectic day), I was really looking forward to it.

The meal is made by a big chain in China, and there were a few flavor available, the spicy hotpot was everybody's favorite, but I find it less filling than a real meal with rice.(I love carbs).  So in addition to the spicy hotpot, I ordered the tomato beef brisket and mild spicy beef stew(both comes with rice).  The depicted is the mild spicy beef stew, and I followed the instruction to fill in cold water to the rice, and to the self heating pad underneath the translucent white bowl.  Then I closed up the lid and wait for 15min, viola, I was in for a real treat with steamy hot food!  The meal was actually really quite tasty and the rice is fully cooked(I love Mountain House freeze dried meals, but sometimes the rice don't cook 100%).  Funny thing is--it even comes with a mini black plastic spork, so all I need to eat this meal is plain cold water.

So this is a "green" as being one of the 'main' for my menu.
