I definitely didn’t go light.

What will be the interesting part for me is the 0001 Local time.  Seeing that I am normally up until around 4-5am, I’ll have to remember any late night snacks come from the GSMRE.

Is it against the spirit of the challenge if at 0001 local on 06June, I’m eating a big bowl of ice cream?

Yes.  As Nix said it all fits into the metal case
(Image removed from quote.)(Image removed from quote.)
I replaced the carbon felt with a piece of suede.  The 6 inch ruler is shown for size and it is about .75in thick when closed.

The thread Nix shared above is me going on about how much I love this little stove.
Agree, with the twig burners having a lot going for them.  I can easily boil 12oz of water with just a handful of twigs.

I really like that  :tu:

I was thinking just after i posted my photo that i'm a bit on the light side, you know when you eat noodles and ten minutes later your'e hungry again? i might need to reshuffle and swap dinner for lunch, if that's not allowed at least i have my can of beer to drown my sorrows, then early bed  :D

Once the GSMRE goes into storage, it must stay in storage until Chow day.....which is this Saturday!   :ahhh

But you can eat your grub in any manner you like. Have your breakfast for dinner. Have your snacks for breakfast.  In my experience, people tend to eat some part of their MRE's at one time and save some parts for later, and trade or swap components with others. Too bad we don't have an easy system to allow for swapping in this challenge......

Make sure your civilian "pogey bait" is consumed prior to 0001 June 5th!  And no cheating until after 0001 June 6th! Otherwise it is just what you had the foresight to pack in the GSMRE and all the water you can carry.

I’m good.  Between trail mix, M&Ms, popcorn, peanut bar; I got all the snacks I’ll need plus some.  I just fear the freeze dried ice cream might not fill the craving for the real thing.

But don’t worry I went to college with a lot of Catholic students, who knew exactly how to time the pizza delivery to arrive at 0001 right as lent ended, so I know how to time it.

We had a power outage here this evening. A lightning storm...very little rain to go with it...apparently knocked out our local power. Naturally I panicked a ran for the Bug-out Bags. Mrs Nix has her Bug-out Bag fairly well sorted out, but mine is in a state.....a state of transition.

Unable to Bug-out, we opted to Bug-in.

Seemed like a good excuse to break out the ol' Svea and get a brew on. You know the old saying: "When the going gets tough, the tough get the kettle going." My mantra.

I really like this stove, but I confess that it does scare me a bit. When it is up and running, it roars like a jet engine and puts out a tremendous amount of heat as it burns white gas. But to get it going, you essentially douse the thing in fuel and set it on fire. Assuming the flames die down and that it doesn't blow up, you can open the control valve and the escaping pressurized gas is ignited by the last of the priming flames. The timing can be a bit tricky.

The stove itself becomes really hot...this is necessary to pressurize and vaporized the fuel. I always hope the engineers got the science behind this right and that it can't hold enough fuel to heat itself to the point of exploding. So far the engineers seemed to know what they were doing, but everything has a failure rate......

Aside from having to be wildly cautious about not setting one's self or a National Forrest on fire, and once you can get your anxieties under control, the Svea has some real advantages. It is rugged and fairly simple. Because it uses White Gas (I think it's called "Shellite" down under.) it is weight efficient, meaning you get quite a few BTU's per mL. That weight efficiency is a good thing, because the stove itself is made from brass and is sort of heavy. But White Gas burns and burns hot. This makes the Svea an excellent option for Winter use when canister stoves or even alcohol stoves may struggle a bit. And Winter snow reduces the chances you'll set the forrest on fire. Which is nice.

The Svea can be set to simmer up to flamethrower. The jet is controlled with a fine needle that provides good control. Although even the lowest simmer seems fairly hot. Still, the illusion of control is fabulous.

The thing I like about this stove is that it has character. And it is quirky which makes it fun to fiddle with. It takes some skill to get it going without burning yourself up or the camp down, but that skill is rewarded with superb heat and a friendly roar of confidence. I love my canister stoves: the MSR Pocket Rocket is a legend for good reason and the Jet Boil is better than anything at cranking out the hot water. But for versatility, reliability, and fun, the Svea is tough to beat. It's probably my favorite stove and the last one I'll give up.

I think after that beautiful and detailed explanation, I will gladly stick to my Coleman Peak1 for a white gas stove.  All you have to do for priming that is a little pumping with your thumb and maybe some paste if it is really cold out.

Your explanation also makes alcohol stoves sound a lot less dangerous than some people make them out to be.

Either way, I now have no desire to get a Svea stove.

After Nix’s articulate description of his evening stove experience, I thought I’d share another for those who like freeze dried meals, but may not want to deal with a stove.

Exactly.  I’ve had this one since 1990.   It had gotten stored and forgotten at my parents for several years and with fuel in it.   It started right up on first try.  It needed to run a little to smooth out the flame, but good after.

So, tomorrow we feast. But how?

Are we limited to our MRE cutlery-wise? I only have my cheddar block that needs cutting, and the plastic knife I have may be enough, but if not, do I just use my teeth? Or am I allowed to use my ST300, whose challenge I am in the middle of?

I think mine is from 1987 or 1988.  And I have the same story: sat on a shelf with some fuel for a few years while I played with other stoves. When I decided to fire it up again.....it lit right away. I was fairly amazed. Sturdy beasties. Mine serves in a car-camping role.  :tu:

This challenge presumes that you will have a multitool of some kind with you. ( This is MTo after-awl. )

MRE's from many nation include some sort of eating utensil. The US "Brown spoon" is a favorite of mine. The UK eating utensil is particularly fearsome. For that reason, I included a utensil in my GSMRE. But some nations expect that you'll have a mess kit with you. If your GSMRE represents a thoughtless nation and does not include a utensil, by awl-means provide your own personal eating tools.

Most MRE's are designed to be opened and eaten without additional tools. However, there are exceptions. Even with US MRE's, which are designed to be peeled open, a knife is sometimes handy. Obviously, canned goods might require a can opener. The old C-Rats made the P-38 a treasured item. So, use you 'mess kit' and multitools!

( And, since this is MTo, some action shots of your multitool(s) used during the course of Chow Day would be greatly appreciated!   :tu:  )

Shouldn't chow day be Monday?  Stored for a week from 31 May is 7 June, not 6 June.

Never mind.  Just re-read the rules and it clearly states Chow Day is June 5th.

You are correct, Sir!

( We went with Storage on a Sunday to allow people to use a weekend to build the GSMRE and the following Saturday as Chow Day so ( most ) people would have a weekend day to 'enjoy' their GSMRE and post snaps and comments on Saturday & Sunday. So our GSMREs will only have been stored for a 'short week'.   ;)  )
