Eams -- it awl looked good and highly palatable.

I bet some raisin or dried apple would have perked up those oats and made breakfast a bit more exciting. But I love oats, so you can't go by me.  :D

How was the hot sauce?
Didn't use the hot sauce I had planned on keeping it for dinner but my pasta turned into soup.

This was am awesome challenge Nix and thanks for organising!

I noticed everybody was eating a lot of carbs.  Noodles, cereals, and rice dishes are easy to find in a shelf stable format.  My problem is I'm a diabetic who has been specifically told by my doctor to avoid carbs.  They give you energy and help you feel full, but my body just doesn't process this stuff the way it used to and I'd kind of prefer not to die.  I couldn't make a habit out of eating this way but it was okay for a day.  I never had a blood sugar spike the whole day, even after eating the ramen noodles for lunch, because I spread everything out and interspersed my carb intake with enough protein to balance it out.  I envy those of you who could and did treat yourselves to candy and sweets and I thank you for providing me with a vicarious pleasure. Now, did somebody really say there was a merit badge for this or was I delirious?

My problem is I'm a diabetic who has been specifically told by my doctor to avoid carbs.

I think that in general most of eat more carbs than is good for us. I'm not diabetic, but I still try to avoid excessive carbs, especially simple carbs.

I try to eat whole grains, legumes, and plants as my carb sources. While these have significant amounts of carbohydrate, they tend to be absorbed more slowly ( lower glycemic index ) and not trigger the same spikes in blood sugar and insulin response.

The GSMRE was a great excuse to have a bit of a "cheat day" for me.   :D

Not everybody ate a lot of carbs. :D
My GSMRE was 2500 Kcal but only 20g carbs. I started a low carb diet in May to lose some fat, and Nix suggested I do a low carb MRE, and it turned out quite nice. I wanted to include some items that I did not manage to find, but saw in a few MREs, like small packets of nuts, olives, single SPAM portions, peanut butter packs, etc. But I did have a few great items, and even some sweets.
Here's my content list again.

Chow Day 17:30ish :

Broke out the Dinner module. I was really looking forward to this meal.

(Image removed from quote.)

Clockwise from top-left:

• Tuna fish ( As SeaMonster noted, this is dry packed with very little liquid. Makes for an easy carry. )
• Hydrant beverage powder, Lime ( Another low-calorie drink flavoring, but this one has some electrolytes. )
• M&M's ( Another military ration classic. During WW2, sales were limited to military buyers only. )
• Crackers with cheese  ( I had difficulty finding small packages of crackers. 'Hardtack' is a classic ration item. These were my substitute. )
• Chana Masala ( Chickpeas in sauce. I love chickpeas. )
• Licorice tea (2) ( Non-caffeinated hot beverage useful for sitting around and telling exaggerated tales of adventure. )
• Hot Cocoa mix
• Center: Vegemite, small serving ( I'm completely jealous of the New Zealand and Australian rations that come with Vegemite. I love the stuff. Soooo much better than Marmite, too. )

I knew you had vegemite! :ahhh

Found a nice shady spot and broke out the Lunch module.

(Image removed from quote.)

Clockwise from top left:

• Gatorade mix
• Sweetened condensed milk and tea
• Green olives with chili and thyme
• Spam ( an military ration classic! )
• Jalapeño Cashews ( I've had Jalapeño cashews in actual MREs, I suspect these are the exact ones. )

I wanted all those for my MRE but did not find any.

I was sorry I didn't get to use it. I did save out the Vegemite and the cheese crackers to have as a snack yesterday, but the occasion did not present itself. Maybe today.....

I'm just catching up on all your reports now. Well done everyone and it looks like much fun was had by all.  :hatsoff:

I intended participating in this challenge but I'm having issues with (not) being paid lately and was busy over the weekend anyway but I will have a go at it one day...

I remember similar things when i was a kid but these were cig shaped with a little red end on them to simulate the burning cig and came in a packet like the real ones, i think they banned them as they claimed it encouraged children to start smoking  :tu:
We had (have?) these, unlike some others the packaging is not made to look like that of cigarettes.

The day is over here now and I didn't touch the remaining Jerky or nut mix.
So some 573kcal are left from initial 2700kcal.

I've then consumed 2427kcal over the day  :salute:

Having a means to make a hot beverage or meal during an unexpected “emergency” is important, I think for the mental impact as much as physical.
I remember watching some silly TV programme where they drop survival experts in the middle of nowhere with only a few items and they must survive for a few days. There was a British (RAF?) guy who managed to somehow make tea one morning and he explained that it was great for morale to be able to do things like that that you would normally do back in the real world.

I think he was including the pint of Stout he drank, but wasn't listed in his ration,...and then tried doing maths. That's my best guess.   :dunno:

That's the one, although it was called (apparently) Survive That here. I couldn't remember either title.

This is the episode where he made tea. He had a tiny trad and a Victorinox Trekker with him as well.
