Is it a super tool?  At its core, yes, but not really!  Sorry, couldn't help the bad puns.

While meeting all of the requirements to be a part of the SuperTool series (large, plain and serrated blades, no scissors) the Core from Leatherman fit in closer with the Kick, Blast and Fuse because of it's Zytel liners.

Learn all about the Core at the Multitool Encyclopedia!  https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Core

When it comes to number of functions, few tools are in the same category as the SwissTool from Victorinox.  When it comes to cool, very few tools can match the coveted Black Oxide SwissTool.

How cool is it?  Well, it has entries on both the Multitool Encyclopedia and SAKWiki.

One of the finest modified knives I have is this micarta scaled Victorinox One Hand Trekker from a member who has been missing for far too long.

Most modern knife customizers owe Bill (aka Scibeer on the forums) a huge debt of thanks, even if they don't know who he is.  He was a true Pioneer when it came to SAK mods.

The Core is the black sheep of the Supertool family but without the individual tool improvements it had the ST300 wouldn't be what it is today :salute:

The Swisstool is a beast of a tool as well but I can never get along with them as good as LM for some reason

I'm really surprised at Leatherman for not adding the Core to the SuperTool series.  While I love the ST300, and certainly consider it superior to the Core, I do feel that the SuperTool series skipped a generation.  I kind of think of the Core as the ST250, halfway between the ST200 and ST300.

It should have been the ST300 and what we have now should have been the ST400 :o or at least they could have called it the Core ST :salute:  that would have been a tip of the hat at least but who knows what direction that they were planning on going in tool design at the time  if not for so many complaints about the zytel we likely might have seen a completely different direction with LM and their tools

Now we will never know :D

Give it ten years.  Leatherman will reissue it with half the functions removed and call it the Twirl.  The fanboys will rejoice.

Meanwhile, speaking of Leatherman....

When it comes to keychain tools the folks at Leatherman have done quite well for themselves.  This second generation Squirt model, known as the PS4 is a great example of how to do things right.

It's got a good color, great knife blade, file, screwdrivers and excellent little light duty pliers.  Everything you need in a handy package!

Read more about the Squirt PS4 (and the other Squirt models!) In the Multitool Encyclopedia!  https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Squirt+PS4

Another forum shoutout today!

When we talk about the biggest, baddest tools on the market, the PowerLock from SOG is always on the list.  But, if that isn't big and bad enough for you, SOG has you covered with the Blacktip.

With a one handed opening blade, replaceable cutters, Compound Leverage and the usual array of typical multitool functions, the Blacktip is ready for everything- and then some.

Note how dainty the Leatherman Surge (often jokingly compared to a boat anchor!) looks next to the Blacktip!

I missed yesterday, so I decided to run with something extra cool today!

The BuckTool 360 is a largely forgotten tool, even from the folks that made it, but it is extremely important in the evolution of multitools as we know them today.

It was the first multitool that incorporated the concept of ergonomics (note the smooth, Coke bottle shaped handles!) and the legend on the side stating what functions are in which handle.

If they had stuck with it, I imagine they would be serious contenders these days.

Allegedly they sold the patent to Leatherman, and if that's the case I have to wonder why Leatherman is making bracelets and crap like the Free series when they could be making Leatherman 360s.

One of my absolute favorite knives today and I celebrated it with a meme!   :D

Remember that time when Wenger ran the Patagonian Expedition Race?  That was awesome!

Even more awesome were the knives they produced for it, like the Patagonian Expedition Race Ranger 179 with yellow EvoGrip scales and laser etched Race logo.  This is one of three models produced for the Race.

Had I known then, I'd have a much larger Wenger collection than I do now!

I've always been a "root for the underdog" type, and so Wenger always appealed to me, even though I have always carried Victorinox more than anything else.

While it may look like any other one handed opening tactical blade, the Hunter Pro is actually a very cool Swiss Army Knife from Victorinox!

It's a very cool of modern and traditional with a relatively wide but very comfortable handle, smooth action and excellent lock up- exactly the Swiss precision you expect from the fine folks in Ibach.  And, this is just the regular model!

It should be obvious that this is not the regular Zilla Tool from Columbia River Knife and Tool.  This is a special edition model made for Sports Authority, with red handles.

As one of the relatively few fixed head plier tools available on the market, the Zilla Tool has always been special to me, and this black and red variant puts it over the top.

Co-designed by knifemaking legend Blackie Collins, the ParaTool from SOG had a unique sideways opening plier head.

The Paratool also benefitted from SOG's replaceable tool system which allowed for either a custom load out or user replacement of broken tools.

Hey Grant,

Thank you for these daily posts. It's always interesting reading about what's out there besides SAKs.

Thanks!

They seem to generate a fair bit of discussion on FB, but not as much here, where it matters unfortunately.  But then, the info shared on the Social Media platforms is minimal compared to the shared info of forum members.

So far, not really.  But, stuff like this takes time and I'm not a 16 year old girl (anymore) so I expect the MTO social media accounts will be a very slow build!

Few tools elicit as much excitement among collectors as the Leatherman MiniTool, despite really being that useful.

The idea was to have an ultra compact tool that folded out into a full set of pliers, but this severely restricted the other functions, which were limited to a tiny file, stubby blade and barely useful can and bottle openers.

Still, the MiniTool has been popular, almost iconic for years- see why in the Multitool Encyclopedia! https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Mini-Tool
