Day 30

Changing of the guard.
This utility knife will be returned to the kit.

My SAK and Stockman will resume pocket duty.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

My other utility knife has been returned to it tool bag and the Gerber pry will find a new home in junk drawer in the kitchen to scrape lottery tickets requiring such action.

Interesting challenge, the thirty days seemed to take longer, maybe because I did not have to much time spent pondering which implement was getting duty.

Congratulations to awl who completed.  And, to Dan for hosting.  Excellent job.

Day 30

Continued removing pictures and paintings from the walls of the living room, dining room, and hallway. Did more filling and sanding of the repairs I did yesterday. I really do not like drywall dust. I really like how fresh and clean a room looks after new primer and paint. I guess I struggle with the journey from one stage to another. I am going to let the dust from this morning’s sanding settle and do one more cleaning before I start in on priming the ceiling and walls this afternoon.

I just wanted to say thank you Dan for hosting the challenge this month. Using the Stanley brought back fond memories of my Dad and Grandpa and made me appreciate the time I got to spend with them. I also wanted to say thank you to all who join in the challenge. It was fun seeing what everyone got up to this past month. I especially enjoyed learning about all of the different type of utility knives you all used. I also wanted to say to thank to Kaevin for his detailed posts on the many different snap blade utility knives. I really am not familiar with this type of knife, so I found it interesting learning  the differences between the many different ones he posted.

Thank you awl and I wish you a Happy New Year!

Day 30

Finally putting the Valet Auto Strop to good use by opening up a pack of Field Books.

Thanks to Dan for hosting this challenge.  It was fun seeing all the different choices of utility knives out there.  I never would've learned about the Valet Auto Strop if it wasn't for this challenge.

Cheers!

@JonesE: considering your location, I'm completely unsurprised that it rained all day.

@AzteCypher: that Valet Auto Strop is pretty cool!

@BPRoberts: that would be a neat place to visit!

@cody6268: "peg-warmers" are something else I remember well from my die-cast collecting days.

@kaevin: I have a few bottles and a lot of cans that should be turned in for refund...

@LoopCutter: great bones on that Stockman! I assume it's a 75?

And now it's time for some final thoughts on the utility knives. They are less than ideal for kitchen duty, but they handled every other task I threw at them quite well. Being able to change blades to better suit the task at hand, or when they get dull, is a great bonus. This challenge was a hell of a lot of fun. I'm pleased to have hosted it and honored to have had such a great group of fellow challengers!

And just a quick update: the badge hasn't gotten the green light as of this post. Hopefully soon. I still have plans to do a giveaway for those who earn a badge, but again, that's contingent upon my being able to procure the intended prize.

Now to briefly switch to the phone used for photography and post the day 30 photo.

Day 30

Here are two that waited until today to show themselves. If memory serves me correctly, I bought the Champion Quality Tools job not long after relocating to Michigan. It's seen quite a lot of use, and the screw at the top of the blade slot has to be tightened periodically. The bright green Stanley is a more recent addition that sat neglected for a while. It got a dose of spray disinfectant before the photo was taken. Bith of these live in my "home tools" box and could use new blades.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The final tally...

Utility knife record: 22-1.
Stanley record: 3-4-4.
DeWalt record: 4-3-4.

NT cutter AR30D-WB

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
In package

Yes I just remembered it is a 30 day challenge, but December has 31 days. So here is an extra entry and I promise it is the last cutter I buy, in 2024.

This is one of the 3 colors of their 30 degree with color body A sized cutter from NT cutter released in June 2024. Stone grey SG, Leavy green LG and Wood beige WB. Features a plastic shell over the stainless steel rail. Fill mount is possible and it is designed to be easy to hold on both left or right hands.

Day 30
Here we are on the last day.  Thanks to Dan for hosting and to all who participated, whether they completed or not.  I enjoyed seeing everyone's selected utility knives being used for various tasks.  I liked carrying a utility knife as they were more than up to most of my daily cutting needs.  A lot of my cutting needs involves puttering around in the yard and I found that the utility knives don't work on palm fronds and can't trim the hedges, but they did suffice at opening bags of soil and mulch.  Today I used the WorkPro to open an insulated pack from the pharmacy containing refrigerated meds.

The black, no name cutter is a solid EDC that is very capable and comfortable to use.  The WorkPro was my favorite utility knife for pocket carry because it is so light that it was barely noticeable in my pocket.  The Stanley would be my first choice for heavy duty use such as cutting up carpeting which I didn't need to do during the challenge, but I have used it for that purpose before.  The flat sliding box cutter slips easily in a shirt pocket and would be my first choice for office use if I had to open packages all day.

This cutter is a bit polygon/squarish. Sets it apart from the more streamlined designs like A300, A500. Comparing to the A1000 its outline is still very hard and straight. It's almost like NT speaking in Olfa language. And it's very light given it's plastic shell. If there is something embossed on the back, it will look better, like the lines on the back of A300 or just the brand name and model number.

Somehow I think the slider may fit the STL-ONE and alike.

It have been hard to choose between this and the PMGA-EVO2 (an all black A300GRP with 30 degree black blade). But lastly I decided to get this as this is another body shape and design. The muted tones of all 3 colorway are pleasant as well and posed a hard decision to choose 1 out of three.

Final thoughts:
In this challenge, I bought 9 new cutters. Making it a total of 25 in the end. Some of them I have been wanting to get for a long time. Many of these look the same in the look or even in the feature list, but when unboxed and used actually they are different.

Out of these brands, I like NT and Olfa the most. They are the best hands down. SDI and Tamiya are okay. Tamiya is lacking the tighter tolerance and precisions nowadays and slide more to the "bigger and strong" side with less precision with special features they think would be useful for their audience like the driver tip and fins in some of their models. SDI lacks polish in some of their models. I think they can "do it" but choose not to, to keep their cost down. They have innovated in their design with ingenuity series or the model which I do not own like the 3006C.

There are still some models I want to get hold of like the 3006C mentioned above, the Knipex CutiX, the NT A300 we used to use in art lessons, the NT K200RP and  Olfa 180 which are the original forms of S-202P, the wood composite OLFA WD-AL, the NT L-2000GRP etc, but I should stop before my wife gets mad.

Thanks Dan for the challenge and all of you who joined or tag along and bared with my utility cutter obsession. Hope you enjoyed.

Thank you😉

@LoopCutter: sky blue bone? I bet that's pretty!
~

I owed you a picture back from day 6

The package contained a MiniTrapper in Sky Blue, a back up since I had not found a Trapper in the requested color.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I did finally find a regular trapper in Sky Blue, arrived on 12/23!

So during my search and digging deep in dealers inventory my search for one knife, allowed me to fine four additional knives. A mini (pictured), a pocket worn grey bone Tribal, and two different Sea Dragon models. 🙄
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Day 29: no use for the knife. However, while opening my dinner,  I found I've been wrong about Wenger can openers for a decade. They don't suck.

On the eve of the Buck challenge, I surprised to learn my beef with the Wenger can opener wasn't design flaws, but simply user error. Honestly, I've found that adjusting the angle (I was letting the tool pierce too deep into the can), it's faster than just about every other knife-based can opener I have, and might even tie with my P-51.

Hard to believe that I've had Wengers with can openers for a decade, but just now figured out how to use them. The reason they kept getting stuck in the can was because I was letting the can opener go to far.

Day 30

Today's pic is my surprise favorite of the challenge, the Prybrid X. When it came in, I thought it was going to be too wimpy for much of anything. I expected the prybar to pry the knife apart and the xacto blade to be too small for much use. And while I wouldn't want to be stranded in the woods with it, or have it be the only multi for the rest of my life, it handles my basic EDC needs pretty well in a nice little package. Also, comes with a spiffy lanyard. Sometimes you just want just enough, and the PB-X does that.

The full size Prybrid would be a great companion for working around the house, giving you a bit better pry surface and a larger blade. I think I'll probably swap the blade in mine and put it in the tool box.

Speaking of blades, I made it through the whole month without having to change once. It helps that I rotated between four tools.

The Lockdowns are a step up from Gerber's previous SAK-a-Like series (the Armbars), but still not great. Of the two, I prefer the Pry (the Drive's bit driver leaves a lot to be desired, and the scissors are handy). I think they get a little closer with every try at a knife based MT. Maybe we'll get a winner out of them in a couple years (hopefully one they make state-side, I think Gerber has one of the biggest US vs outsourced quality ranges in the industry.)

A utility blade is plenty for basic stuff like cutting cord and opening packages. Wouldn't really want it for food prep or whittling, but if you really hate sharpening knives (or do a lot of cardboard), you could probably get by this way.

Thanks for hosting FX! I'll see some of you in the Buck challenge for January!

And here we go...

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Cody6268 is our winner! Cody, I'm not sure if I have your address, so please PM it to me just in case. I'll get your Gerber EAB Topos on the way as soon as humanly possible. (I have to work on Saturday, so I'll do my very best to make it happen on Thursday or Friday.)

And now for those new photos...

Day 31

Inspired by JonesE, I purchased this today.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

It's a Milwaukee Fastback, bearing the number 48-22-1501. The metal handle gives it a nice heft, and the blade opens and locks into place easily...just a push of the button and a roll of my wrist. I suspect some adjustment may be needed, as blade retention isn't as secure as I'd like. The cord cutter notch likely would have worked better if it wasn't so close to the blade tip. And I haven't figured out how works the scoring assist (not that I have much use for such a thing). So far, it's acquitting itself nicely.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Thanks again to everyone for making this such a terrific challenge!

Day 30:

Spent the day on Flight Simulator: 2020 and some model train repair (more on that during the Buck challenge--I'll have to go by a new hobby shop to get some parts before I keep going). Had the Coast and Knipex for the train stuff, ancient Magellan GPS unit (for pulling up some saved coordinates) and Xbox controller on my desk.

I honestly found little a utility knife couldn't do, and I love the ability to swap out chipped blades instead of spending half a day repairing damage. I'm glad Farmer X hosted this challenge, as most of mine spend their days in toolboxes or as second potato--not my normal cutting tool (which as of late, is becoming more and more towards fixed blades around the farm). I'm surprised at how well they performed. The thin blades cut much better than a thicker pocketknife blade. Plus, I'm not afraid to scrape, or cut things that might quickly dull a regular blade.

So far:

Stanley. One of my favorites. Light, thin, and rugged. Easy to unlock as well. While the blades are hard to find (only a small farm supply sells them), they sharpen up well.

Valet. For light use, you can't go wrong. Weighs effectively zilch, is paper thin, and takes single-edge razor blades (need to order some without the reinforcement). That being said, the near-century old carbon steel blade in it still holds an excellent edge.

Klein. My work knife these days, and the one I often use the most due to the screwdriver. It is heavy, though.

Coast--pretty lightweight, but flimsy compared to the EAB.

EAB. Carried one for years. Personally, it's my recommendation for a first utility knife.  Since my current one is still MIA, I'm grateful Farmer X has given me one of his.

Olfas.A little long for pocket carry, but light and very well made. I'm going to try a solid blade (non-snap off) in the larger one, as it's very easy to use one-handed. Thus, I can use it as a regular retractable blade knife.

Posted on December 31.
Nice one! :D
I enjoyed all the different models you posted.
I think I'll look into NT. I've been getting lots of Japanese tools from Amazon JP so I'll see what NT tools I can get.

Speaking of NT
Discovered this a while back, it is interesting.

RES-1200GP I think it is discontinued.  More like a seat belt cutter and glass breaker with extra cutter function. I don't have a car to throw one into so, I will pass this one.

Japanese also have a "middle size" between the light duty A size and L large size, they call it middle size H. And there is an extra large size as well. H and XL blades are hard to come by though.

Thanks Jones, Fx and RP. I'm glad that you enjoyed my posts.

Here the snap off ones are the major, and trapezoid utility blades are minority.

Thanks to you guys I've learnt about the Valet Auto Strop, Olfa CTN-1 (and get one myself) and also the Stanley 10-049 and many more.
