Day 19

Used the Buck for a little food prep today as my daughter wanted apples with her lunch.  Had to oblige of course.

Day 20 + Mini Challenge

The mini was a real challenge to me, so to properly handle I selected two combo knives for this day and then changed up my plans, taking a hit for the team😉

Last night, a trip to a food store searching for my favorite breakfast bread, I found the deli was running a promo for a Bristo meal, a protein plus two sides for $5.  Broiled steak strips and broccoli slaw, and a broccoli/apple salad.
My meal for either lunch or dinner depending how long my doctor’s visit runs.🥺

My Vic OHT was knife number 1, I like the SE and its position on the forward part of the blade.

The other, my OPINEL No8 Outdoor.  The Combo blade is more traditional and with the PE at the forward position allows for the best comparison on what ever I would cut if against a hard surface or cutting as a rip saw motion.

The first comparison, cutting man made material.  The container, plastic containing the food, seperate lid from the base so the lid can be nested underneath.

Both knives had no issue, using the tip or the heal, no matter the SE or the PE.   👍👍👍👍, max score.

Then, cutting natural material. STEAK, tender juicy steak!

Both blades cut meat with no issues just as I suspected.

I can only admit, this was a tough challenge and I suffered through as tough as it was.   Whew

For many of us a combo edge was our first introduction to pocket tools.  And some of us weren’t the sharpest tools in the shed  :whistle: 

I don’t mind admitting that I used my folding knife for some things that it wasn’t meant for- scraping, tightening screws, prying lids… locking bathroom stalls that have broken bolts :facepalm:

Interestingly… the other inspiration I had when coming up with this challenge was from cutting meat that has been trussed with butcher’s twine.  I was cutting it up on a camping trip. Not only was it getting dark in the evening, but cooking it outdoors had caused it to puff up and I couldn’t find the butchers twine so I couldn’t cut it off first. So as I sliced through the meat I would get caught up in the twine.

If I hadn’t been using my skeletool it would have been a bit more difficult.

Day 20 (catching up)

Right tool for the job mini-challenge

The job was cutting a piece of elastic cord that was preventing me from wearing some new boots. Both edges did it equally well. My experience has been that serrated edges are best on thick synthetic line (that's Sailor-speak for rope), but plain edges work better for me in all other jobs.

Yesterday was a rough day so apologies for the late posting.  I'll explain more in a bit.

Day 20 - ketchup

Mini Challenge
For the man made material I cut the tape off this box.  The PE cut right through it like a hot knife through butter.  The SE did cut it but it did leave a jagged edge.  PE wins on this one.




For the natural material I cut into an orange from my dad's orange tree.  Having the PE and SE both on the same blade actually helped.  The PE got me started into the orange and the SE made short work of cutting through the rest.




What about the rough day you ask?  Work wasn't too bad actually.  But were were hosting a 10 girl slumber party for my daughter's 10yr birthday.  I'm not sure that was the wisest decision even though mife wife had a friend helping.  :think:
My son had opted to stay at a friends house so he wouldn't have to deal with the shrieking.  I went to drop him off, then I picked up some dinner for the wife and I.  When I got back my wife told me she might've broken her toe.   :o

Turns out one of the little girls was running through the kitchen when she slipped, landed on my wife's toe with her knee, which then caused her to slide into the stove, shoving my wife's toe under the stove.  Her toe was purple.  My wife kept going but you could tell she was in pain.  The rest of the evening involved shrieking and laughing girls until they settled in for the night.  Girls went home by 9am today so we re-checked my wife's toe.  It was black purple now.  I told her we needed to take her to one of the emergency clinics to get her checked out.  She wanted to take the kids to their soccer games first and then go to the clinic.

After the games we took the kids home while I drove my wife to the clinic.  My son's 13 so he's pretty responsible now.  After the x-ray it was determined that it wasn't broken just really beat up because of the girl's knee landing on it and then being shoved into the stove.  We have her big toe taped to her next toe and she's wearing a boot to stabilize her foot more.  Ouch...

Thought this group might enjoy a pic of my Vic Skipper.

It’s a fantastic tool set, but at 6.3 ounces it’s unfortunately heavier than I want to carry around.

I really enjoy the combo blade on my OHT!

On a SKIPPER, that can be an advantage.

You should share a color picture, as imho, the blue camo looks very good on any 111mm

My bad, it is a color picture, just darker.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Day 22

My first Skeletool was gifted to a favorite hotel clerk who had moved and was assembling furniture at a new apartment.  I carried inside my jacket’s vest pocket but will admit it was not a big fan.

This SKELETOOL was purchased a year or so later but was just broken free from packaging got this challenge 😉

I gifted my first Skeletool without even opening the box. I was camping with a friend who needed a multitool for something. I had a SAK in my pocket and the skeletool new in the box in my backpack.  So I took the opportunity to indoctrinate my friend into the world of multitools.

I had already had the Skeletool KBx that I had been using, and liked it so much that I bought two KB models along with the full version that I gave away.

I totally understand wanting to get a new one for myself, after parting with the old one… but I have been able to hold off since I don’t use pliers much. Other knife-based multitools… that’s another story.  :facepalm:

Breaking out the Winchester.... knife with PE and SE.  Used it to cut down a rubber hose for the float in our downstairs toilet.




It's a pretty knife but the fit and finish isn't there unfortunately.  I learned later that it's originally part of a nice boxed set.  The liner lock wasn't engaging all the way.  I couldn't remove the pivot screw to try and file down the edge of the liner a bit.  Feels like they used really cheap screws and red locktite.  I ended up filing the end that meets the liner lock so that it would fully engage.  It's actually sharper than I expected but we'll see how long that edge lasts.

Preparing for the day, my CASE COPPERHEAD is riding in my pocket.   The combo blade has not ever let me down, but me a couple times but cuts when required.

Paired with my BOND. The pliers handle gripping tasks that my fingers now fail with🥺

Day 25 + mini challenge + favorite picture to another thread.

This mini was a tough one for me.  I had been taught to always treat a knife with respect.   My fix blade farm knife’s I sharpened from a blank and put to scraps of wood and shaped the handle were crude, put served me well.   In fact my first pocket knife a Japan trapper, with its two blades is still with me from the summer I was 8 yo and snuck to a small village about five miles away on my bike and bought still is in working order. It cleaned rabbits, pheasants I hunted after school, muskrats I trapped on my grandparents drainage ditches, and CC leaned many a fish caught during the summers and winters ice fishing on SATURDAYS with my DAD. Considering that I am now 72, were are approaching 64 years of service.

I will admit, combo edges I thought were novelty items sold as tactical gear.  I have changed my opinion, they are practical in some situations and I have about a half a dozen about with 2 favorites for my current needs.

But last night I did recall a time I did use a tactical combo blade incorrectly, I believe it was fate I even had it with me.

Part one.   I was working my parking construction gig, installing a gate control panel for semis drivers to access a processing plants loading and unloading docks.  It was mid winter, JANUARY thaw, snow was fading fast and walking to the dock doors to use the facilities I found a knife in the mud.  Put it in my work coat pocket and did my business, then back tracking through the lot I find another knife, maybe the same area, it too caked with mud and ice as it was packed under the edge of a snow pile.   Tossed both items into my truck by the tool box.

Finished the job and while. Customer tested and request codes to be entered I examined my finds. Both were wet, put almost identical truck stop tactical style knives. One had a plain edge (pictured), the other a combo se edge.
They cleaned up nicely, no markings, no model number just no descript knives.

PART TWO - Fast forward a month or two, spring is in full swing, a Thursday afternoon 200 miles from home base, been on road since Monday morning, hoping to head toward Indy for the night and some PM WORK.  I get a call that there is potential new customer with unknown gate access issues near by the university I just completed my work.   

I ventured that direction and met the home owner, actually the ESTATE OWNER!  The front gate was a double lane access style, and appeared to have no issues as I past through. The owner in a golf cart says follow me…
About a half a mile in the back is a second gate, single lane, swing gate, in the open position. I learned that it was installed last fall, been giving him fits and now will not close and the form that installed is no longer welcome back.    Gave me the keys and said can you fix or tell what I need to do.

Inspecting I discovered quickly that a safety loop was open, sensing a vehicle was present preventing the gate from closing. Not an easy fix, about 4 hours of work cutting a new loop in the pavement. Took pictures sent to office to send the customer a quote and schedule.   In the time it took to put everything together and power down the gate, apparently the wuote was emailed to owner. He drove back out to me and wanted more of an explanation. So I give him an education.   
OK I need this fixed asap.  I explained I did not have my concrete saw and blades with me. May be possible to rent one if there was a HOMEdepot or LOWES with one two rent. And blades I can buy. That will increase the quote total.   Then said well go get your gear and come back SATURDAY!!!   I can wait the two weeks the quote says.    I am in a pickle, my anniversary was that SATURDAY, our fortieth. Kids planned a party.

It was already 4pm.  Took the covers off the controller, traced wires to a conduit, snaked it and popped out on the edge of the drive. Dug with a screwdriver and found the conduit but more importantly the loop wires and brushing the blacktop found the loop cut and then the entire loop that had been sealed after installation.

Told the owner, I may be able to cut out the present broken loop and not have to cut a new loop. It will take longer but if goes as planned I have it working by tomorrow.  But it will be T & M and the quote will not apply. Plus my expenses for tonight. He approves.

I went to work. The big problem was the installer used size 18  wire not 14. So pulling it out by hand was not going to work, plus instead of three turns they used only two turns.

The found knives come to mind, I am going try cutting the loop sealant from the asphalt. Will ruin the blades no big deal.   By seven pm the COMBO BLADE folder was
Beat to heck, had cut sealant free of the asphalt the entire loop, 4 ft by 10 ft and the access run. The knife was one extremely dull knife and blade was even thinner.

Left the materials in the cutout and called the owner said I will return the morning finish.

I finished the job, proper wire, three loops of wire, twisted at the entry point, pulled through the conduit and connected.  Gate tested!!!  Then sealed the cutout and properly protecting wire, everybody was happy.

I thought I had kept the Combo blade, but searching my tool box it was not found, but did the PE (pictured above)

Two months later, the home owner awarded the firm I worked for contracts for 8 parking structures he owned in BLOOMINGTON, Terry Haute and Indy. Plus new equipment at four of them. 
Never got a thank you from my bosses, left them for retirement the following June.

For the record, I would have used my normal edc knife to do the job, but fortunately I did not have to🤪.

   That was a good story.  I could see it as if I were there.  I don't have any intention of butting in on your challenge.  Just saying that I have been following along and enjoying the photos and posts.  I did this one last year.  It gave me an opportunity to carry one partially serrated Gerber that I had for ages but never carried at all.  Then I got to carry a partially serrated Wingman as well.  I like the idea of a challenge where you can use so many different sorts of tools.  SAKs, all sorts of plier based multis, many other knives.  Congrats to friend ElevenBlade for putting on an interesting show.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)
