Caddy. Bought it because it was different and cheap. Needs a polish.

That's actually a Caddy Plus, the Rambler version of a Caddy with the combo cap lifter. I've seen a number of Caddy, but yours is the first Caddy Plus I've seen other than in the SAKWiki! Nice find!!

I'm going to save that for future reference! Thanks for posting it. I believe the SAKWiki has some holes in it. In fairness, with some models, Wenger went wild with many variants, all marketed with the same name.

John

It was not by Wenger itself but the North America importer (Precise International) who pretended that all the knives sold there should have a proper name.
The knives sold in Europe, from the same time frame, all had a catalog number, not a name (apart from very few exceptions).

Perhaps the scales were swapped, I'm seeing the Caddy Plus described as having the retractable pen, which would be cool actually, I like the pen.

I've had such a great time with the Explorer and Woodsman that I picked up a close cousin, the Outdoorsman!  It's the later model, Marlboro Team model, but I don't think it's seen more than a day or so of pocket time from the lack of wear on anything!  My stone aged camera doesn't do this guy justice, so I'll try to get some more pics in the daylight.

Looking at sakwiki, under variations it is mentioned that it was re-released in 2012 without the pen and in 5 colours... Turquoise being one of them...

Evening everyone, I'm a pretty new collector compared to the bulk of you here, but I did take collection of this xmas 2016 climber today. The images don't really do the blue justice. Interestingly it came with the small screwdriver.

As mentioned earlier, full-sized SAKs with imitation tortoise shell handles are fairly rare. The handles do show up more often on the smaller knives. Here's an assortment of small SAKs (Wenger/top; Victorinox/bottom). Really like the color in some of the Wengers.

As the holiday times approach it's great to see all these SAKs being rescued from shops and ebay and taken in to loving homes. But remember there's still SAKs out there in dusty basements and garages,  and we must carry on till they all have somebody to oil and sharpen them. Keep it up guys!

A couple I got today-

Spartan Lite, appears to have the thicker main blade.

SwissChamp, this one I'm not sure about. Has screw scissors with no hook, so pre '91. (I have a Huntsman with screw scissors and hook - confusing), doesn't have the crimpers on the pliers, metal file appears to be slightly different than the case-hardened one, so perhaps it's 2 generations old. Has plus scales with pen. Of course v1 gray may/long phillips. Not sure of the year on this one. But it was $23 so I figured...

Great finds and cannot argue the price on the SwissChamp. Regarding it, the hook, scissors and other tool versions, there are several plausible reasons for the mix of them. My best guess is it was fabricated circa 1991, but not necessarily in that year. There's ample anecdotal evidence that Victorinox made running changes in tool versions and finished knife versions. That's done to build out all existing parts stocks, the form and fit of which can still be used in lieu of scrapping them. It's been my experience the only time parts stocks are scrapped is for solving manufacturing quality, or sub-standard product reliability and durability issues. What you may be looking at is a SwissChamp that was built in the midst of several tool version changes, including implementation of the hook, which requires a different spring under the scissors. It's not that dramatic a tool, so they would build out all the old springs before putting the hook in.

Regarding the riveted scissors, it's also plausible the knife was sent back and repaired at some point. It was made over two decades ago. Given Victorinox's very generous "lifetime" guarantee, the scissors may have been replaced some time later in refurbishing or repair with riveted ones. The sewing eye and micro-driver stored in the corkscrew were implemented in 1985 with "Plus" scales that have a ballpoint pen.

Some additional things to look at that reveal clues about fabrication year (keep in mind running changes make years fuzzy):
  • Fine screwdriver on back layer and cap lifter with 90 degree stop in 1985 (along with sewing eye in awl)
  • Scissors spring and groove: spring modified in 1990 with cam end to ride in a groove on the back of the moving scissors handle
  • Keyring nub location: moved from small blade spacer in blade layer to opener layer spring in 1991
  • Fluted corkscrew - one source has fluting eliminated in 1991; another in 1994 (this later year perhaps for economy versions)
  • Can key slot in back layer Phillips eliminated circa early 1990's (not applicable to SwissChamp)
  • Striaght Pin hole in scales behind back layer corkscrew/Phillips circa 1993
  • Notch added to 90 degree stop on cap lifter and in-line Phillips in 1999 to increase resistance to accidental closing (also added to in-line Phillips)
John
