I saw one on Pawn Stars the other day, was in rough shape, they threw some money at it to get it fixed up and it looked fantastic!

Personally I'd rather own an original Star Wars pinball machine...

Back to tablets, I really believe they will supplant the PC home computer very soon, and a good portion of the workplace as well.  if I were Microsoft, I'd be more than a bit worried right now.

I'd like to see most websites stick to the same basic design, rather than automatically shunting you to a mobile site or strongly encouraging you to download a special app instead.  I find that you almost always lose something by doing that; the mobile sites are usually a stripped-down version of the web-based application in my experience.

On the smartphones however, I think the mobile versions have their place due to the small real estate you have to work with.

problem is the software can't differentiate between a tablet or a smartphone since they pretty much act the same.

I don't think so.  I think the hardware configuration is sent to the app.

I hate it when I'm on the iPad browser and get transferred to mobile only sites.

So, I've gone over some of my feelings about our recently acquired Kindle Fire. It's great for what it is, a device for consuming media. It's terrible for typing any significant amount... like on these boards.

I found myself liking it less and less when forced to use it for text input, but as soon as my laptop was back up and running, it started shining again. For surfing the web or playing games while I'm on an exercise bike, it's near perfect. Very light, good video, very fast on loading and refreshing pages.

I guess I'm a fan of the 7" tablet format. There's not much it can do that my iPhone 3GS can't, it's just way easier to hit them (slightly less) dinky buttons on the Kindle, and video looks a lot better... and as my eyes get worse, the 7" display is looking a lot more friendly.

I have a love/hate relationship with tablets in general. On the one hand, they are great for being a consumer, on the other hand, they suck when being a producer or contributor. Sometimes I feel like there's a big conspiracy going on to make everybody not inside a megacorporation purely consumers. You are not allowed to host a server from home. Your browser should be on a tablet where it is painful to write anything even close to lengthy, and programming is even more painful. Etc, etc. I love the old idea of the Internet, lots and lots of nodes where everybody both produce and consume, you know, share, be it through common interests, like here, or for commercial purposes.

Rant end. (Oops, this one was rather political. Ah, well, you mods gotta have something to feel needed as well.  )

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note II, and I'm actually quite happy with it, including the huge size. It's really nice having all that screen real estate. It helps that it's pretty thin.

Sweet.  I'm very tempted to pull the trigger on one myself.  If it weren't for that camera issue I'd have already done it.  I'll wait to hear what you think of it.

An observation about the ipad Mini I got my wife for Christmas- with Android the keyboard alternates between upper and lowercase letters when typing.  The keyboard shows uppercase at the beginning of the sentence, when you hit the shift key and when the caps lock is on- basically whenever you are typing a capital letter.  The rest of the time it shows lowercase letters.

On the ipad it always shows caps and the shift key turns blue when you are typing caps so coming from an Android is pretty awkward BECAUSE YOU THING YOU ARE ALWAYS TYPING IN CAPS BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THE KEYBOARD SHOWS.

I can't say I'm a big fan of that on the ipad.

That bugs the heck out of me too, but it doesn't seem to be much of an issue with the Apple Holy See or the Apple faithful.

I was initially more than a bit bemused about being given the mini...everything I've been doing the last few years has been decidedly analogue, everything from the tools and knives,to shooting,to archeology,to relearning to use a dip pen.

I'm not convinced so far by tablets. They are handy,I find myself wandering around the house doing stuff on it,and GarageBand is great, but its just an iPhone I can't make calls on,or a net book I can't run devices like cameras or iPods from.

My friend who gave it to me said he couldn't get me a phaser or a tricorder,so this was the closest thing...funny that Star Fleet called their devices PAADs 20 odd years ago!

Can't comment about Android, but I do wish the keyboard had a caps locked function!

I own a few 10" and 7" tablets and a 9.7" iPad.  I like both sizes, each for it's own applications, but I don't see the iPad Mini as "mini enough." At 7.9" it's just a bit too big to carry in a coat pocket, and a bit too small for regular tablet use.

It does. Hit the shift button twice and the caps lock is on.

I own an iPad2 and a Nexus7.

The iPad2 pretty much collects dust. I never really fell for the Apple philosophy of doing things. It totally pisses me off that I can't just plug it into my laptop and copy files cover to it, like movies and books. The only it gets used now is for magazine subscriptions that won't transfer over to the Nexus7.

I love the Nexus7. Combined with an OTG cable, the sky is the limit. The size fits in the back pocket of my jeans, unlike the huge and heavy iPad. I can have all of the apps that I already have on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Truth be told, the Nexus7 has almost totally replaced my laptop.

One more thing. If you're looking for a minimalist way to lug around your Nexus7 and smart phone, the Chrome Victor absolutely rocks. Just the right size for my Nexus7 and Galaxy S3. Add a clip-on blinky light or a small U-lock to the outside attachment points, and maybe a keychain to the front buckle, and you're ready to rock. No big pack or geeky man purse to lug around. It's all function, wicked tough, gets tons of compliments for non-nerds, and is even almost completely weather resistant. The reflective striping glows like a freakin' torch when hit by a headlight. I've been using this for the last 4 or 5 months, and couldn't be happier.

My employer issued iPads to all of us on the sales team.  I've been using it for a couple of months now and I can honestly say that I like Apple even less now.  I just want Apple to quit trying to control the way I do things.  If you read the Steve Jobs biography it becomes obvious that he was an extreme control freak and it shows in his products.

I was an Apple-hater since the seventies, but for what I use it for, my Apple iPad is the best tablet I own.  What do I use it for? -mostly browsing, music and watching movies at the end of my day.
