Day 26. I really didn't need a knife to do this, but what the heck.

I have done the same! Yesterday after leaving Home Depot - mixed nuts and had to use the Ranger for opening and devouring

Day 26
My day was spent laying/sitting with a heating pad, so no use for the Ranger.

I've got a BK-2 around here somewhere. I've never really come to terms with it. I stripped the coating off (don't like that stuff) and blued the steel. I will say, being 1095 it takes a wicked nice edge. And I love the way the BK line has big handles that are easy to remove and replace.

I think the BK-2 was based off the old British MOD survival knife. The MOD had a 7" blade, which makes more sense to me for a general purpose digging, prying, batonning, coconut-chopping tool. The BK-2 is ....5"?

(Image removed from quote.)
British MOD knife (not actual size)

There is an inherent appeal to a knife designed to "field dress a Buick", but when I step back and really look at it, it seems too thick for a short knife, to short for a batonning knife, too heavy for a pack knife. I suspect that's the reason it's here but I don't know exactly where......

I think my favorite of the BK line is the awesome BK-5, but the BK-9 is a real worker, too. I kept the BK-5 in my kitchen for a while, it does good work and makes a quick job of slicing a cooked brisket or field dressing a cabbage.

I used to love the one tool option ideology but in more recent years, my mindset has drifted towards "right tool for the right job" mentality, and developed the love for more lightweight knives for the easy carry and cutting efficiency.  I can totally see your point of it being a little short for a 'chopper', and maybe that's why many Becker lovers adopt the bigger brother like BK5 or BK9.

I just read up about this knife and Ethan's response on BF, and I think it certainly is the inspiration for BK2.  But it is also interesting how the steel choice/heat treat is so vastly different than BK2, where Ethan talked the British MOD was hardly heat treated and it was so easy to sharpen that it was like modeling clay.  I don't know whether it was a cost thing, or it was intentionally left soft so it is easy to field maintain.  If we look around the world, many bigger blades are intentionally made soft, so it's 'tougher' for chopping while easy to sharpen.

Spent most of the day in Tampa with my daughter and grandkids, and some great weather...not so great today. Overcast big time.
