The Work champ is calling out to me....I love that beast of a knife.  For those who have it and a Hercules, do you have a preference?

I do NOT have a Work Champ.

So far....and we're just four days into the challenge....I have found the Hercules to be large, but easy to carry in a pocket caddy. In use, the grip of the Hercules is as big (or just slightly bigger) as I might want.

Maybe if I had a Work Champ I might say the vary same, but, so far, the Hercules has been very good......verging on "too much of a good thing."

Right now....the Outrider remains my favorite 111mm....perhaps my favorite SAK.

I find it so interesting to see how people have such different needs/uses/ideas. I’ve personally always wondered why there are 2 of the same tool and not something more useful in place of a second knife!  And don’t get me started on the Phillips instead of a corkscrew! But I know for some it’s completely the other way around

I used to think the same way. Then I read that some people reserve the large blade for foodstuff and use the small blade for actions where it might get gunky. Only then did I start to use the small blade, and indeed I found it more precise and useful than the large blade in most cutting situations outside of food preparation  :dunno:

Day 4

On the topic of things I don't do like a normal person... This is how I like to cut an apple with a pocketknife.  I like to slice bite-sized "chips" off of the apple off the outside.  This method works with a knife of any size.

Good method ElevenBlade! :like: :tu: :tu:

I agree the Hercules feels reasonably sized. I carry it in my jeans pocket instead of my usual EDC, a CT34, and to tell the truth I hardly notice the difference. The pocket bulges a bit more than before, much to the chagrin of my wife, but other than that it feels even better given that it doesn't get stuck sideways at the bottom of the pocket. I suppose the Outrider might feel even better still, but I consider the Hercules the better package overall. After all, if you carry a 111 mm SAK, you have opted against an inconspicuous size anyway, so you might as well add the pliers and another Philips.

:iagree:  I actually would consider two Phillips drivers to be a deal-breaker.  What I like about Victorinox is the versatility with just a few tools.  Maybe it's from watching too much MacGyver... the way he used the orange peeler for everything.  I would use the can opener before I used a specialized Philips.

I have the slide lock versions of both the Hercules and the Workchamp. Although the difference in thickness and weight is subtle, and although the Workchamp gives you that particular feeling of having it all (like the Swisschamp does in the 91 mm realm), personally I prefer the Hercules. Being a city dweller, my dream 111 mm SAK would be a Hercules sans saw (another superb knife would be an Outrider sans saw...). This means the Hercules is the next best thing and therefore my favorite.

Day 4

Tidying up around the yard. Used outrider saw to cut down a sapling that was stopping the gate from closing and the scissors to remove some string tangled in the fence …oh and Coco helped of course :)

Nice pic

I searched almost an hour - a knife this big takes some time combing through all layers. But there is no cheese blade... Crap.

Fair enough, but for what it's worth, the two Philips drivers in the Hercules and Workchamp are quite different and you get them "for free" with the scissors and pliers anyway, so why settle for less? On the other hand, if you wanted to be MacGyver, you couldn't touch anything bigger than the Adventurer anyway...

Day 5.

Fastenal, last week, sent me a large gasket instead of this tool.   I was refunded the money, but to my surprise, I was sent the tool today. It was just about $12, but I made sure it was sorted out. I used the belt cutter to rip open the clam pack, but I will admit, I used my Benchmade Mini Griptillian clipped to my left pocket to cut the tape on the box, since I was anxious to see whether they got  it right this time.

For comparison, here's what I was sent (and the exact photo I sent to Fastenal CS) last week.  I'd ordered bearings and the tool. From what I'm seeing, it's a regular problem. Our local Fastenal franchise (whom I called first, despite item has the problem constantly, as does employees of local businesses who use Fastenal.

The dual Phillips drivers in the Hercules is a nice addition. I don't think I use either very often, but I like having them.   :tu:

The scissors layer Phillips is #0/1, while the pliers layer Phillips is #2, correct?

Hercules are bloody expensive, but I'm hoping I can find a used one cheaply before the end of this challenge.

Correct. Good luck with the hunt; I believe it's worth it. Like the Champion or the Handyman, the Hercules is a SAK for connoisseurs. If you get it, you are likely to have made a deliberate decision, as opposed to just getting the flagship Swisschamp or Workchamp and "be done with it".

Day 5

The watch cases I keep my SAK’s in have multiplied since joining MTo, no surprise to anyone there then :pok:

Decided I needed a way to access each case more easily and came across this little shelving unit, glad I measured twice (didn’t need to cut once but you know the drill), perfect fit :like:

Used Outrider throughout except did need a hammer to tack the back

Day 4:

Back to work after being off since 12-23-20.  For my use tonight I opted for my Centurion with the modded Sentinel pocket clip scales.

No pics of use because I’m not really supposed to have my phone out. It’s dinner time right now...

Just been cutting up cardboard. Opening boxes. Cutting parts bags open.  Also used can opener/driver to tighten some screws on a flat screen monitor mount.

The day flew by, so I’m a little late.  The Outrider helped open up and cut the plastic/tape wrapping off a new paper shredder that was a Christmas gift.

Didn't know you could use the cheese blade to clean dogs. Interesting. Although I wonder if you can ever get back to cutting cheese (and afterwards eating it) with it now that you know where it has been...

Thanks gents! The tip actually worked pretty well, good care however, was required. The tool is quite sharp after all.
I did clean it afterwards naturally, so cheese will be consumed.. ;)
