Nice setup....all us Brits want to be Bond, James Bond  :twak:

unfortunately it is very knife unfriendly here in the. UK...even a SAK classic was looked upon unfavorably at a first aid course I was at last Saturday..... :dunno:

I am veterinary surgery trained for medium livestock, so know how to use a knife, but I got a bit of abuse from the other attendees when I recommend that every parent should carry a small UK legal knife, and the reasons why.

That opinel would have you in front of a court.....sad  times.
Sorry to hear that @gra_farmer I'm always shocked how different things are between the states and over there

Day 5

No action today, started my “clear diet” 24 hours🙄

So seeing awl the food prep with nice Opinel cutters is a bit overwhelming!

So a quick stop,  2   “ Tour de France” No8s I found last summer so 2023.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

@Heywood Floyd  is that a JDR titanium pry bar? I have a baby pacu and don't see these in the wild too often

Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk
Hey DB, it is a JDR Hammerhead in S30V. The size and function work for me. I've many more Atwood tools in my inventory and really like them a lot. JDR's stuff is more bespoke and scarce out in the edc woods though.
A JDR Baby Pacu is a cool tool too.
I've another (Chad Nicols' Lizard SS damascus) Hammerhead purchased from Joshua Rice back in 2016 but haven't seen anything from him in ages. Here's a pic of that baby.
Have just provided a discrete pic link as this is an Opinal thread.

Very cool I've had mine so long it's been a decade about since I got it. I used to have something that looked like JDRs work but went on a keyring. Like the Pacu but smaller. Glad there's others out there enjoying his works.

Day 5

Here’s my smallest Opinel, a No. 5.  I got it to have a sheeple-friendly Opinel option, but it is smaller than I really prefer.  I know Opinel makes smaller sizes, but this is about the bare minimum for me.

Here it is with a Case Peanut and a Vic Money Clip…

Opinel '24 Day 05
So, I went in the opposite deirection than nate did today and tried out my biggest Opi.  Today I tested out the No 12 saw on my mango tree. It worked as well as I expected.

This is the level of crazy we have in the UK, picture this scenario, someone sharpens a chopstick with a small pen knife, and then hurts someone with the chopstick...the knife is focused upon as the person would not have been able to hurt someone with the chopstick if it was not for the knife enabling to sharpen it......? Not the person or the chopstick....:ahhh

The reality of it all is that knife crime is high here, and cheap kitchen knives are used, I have personally been stabbed with a very blunt steak knife on a night out with my friends....for no reason at all....thought I was someone else. Not SAK's or Opinels, or anything of value.

Anyway is all for nothing, as of 22nd April 2024, any edged item (including scissors, router bits, saw blades of any kind, etc), will be banned from being sent in the post

So while the England is sane for at least one more month, here is a picture of the wear on some much loved Opinel No8's

So... how are you to get said edged items if not via post?  Hand deliveries?  Carrier pigeon?  Honestly curious.

You have to have a business account with DHL to send (they are the only courier willing to send knives). To receive you will have to proof of age verification at the door, sign and photo of the hand over.....no person and accepted ID, no toys.

Truth is that private sales will stop, some local exchanges of kit, but mostly what you have is all your going to have.

Knife makers in the UK are likely to go bust or just stop, as you need to have a minimum send with business accounts....time will try what happens.....it's a shame  :dunno:

How about another picture :-) was going to post this tomorrow, sharpened the spine to strike a firesteel.....works lovely

As an American that boggles my mind a bit, I am sorry it is getting quite that restrictive. Those Opis aged so well, beautiful knives.

Sorry to hear all that, it's crazy. Knife laws only hurt law abiding citizens. Those opinels look well loved, I really need to get me a few more for sure

No 9 DIY helps in the never ending battle against loose door handles. One of the better MT screwdrivers I've used.

The shape of the handle makes it easy to apply pressure when you have to turn a tight screw.  Opinel puts a lot of thought and testing into new knives from what I understand.  It definitely shows on the DIY.

The DIY is on my list.  I see grey and yellow on the website now but I believe I've seen it in blue on the auction site and I think that is the one I'd like to get if I can find one.

DAY 6

I thought I would showcase the kitchen Opinels.  These are what I use regularly.

Bottom to top:

Opinel No8 stainless steel

Opinel Cheese knife

Opinel Carving knife

I have modified the tip on the cheese knife, as I kept on stabbing myself, a huge improvement to round the tip

If I had to recommend any single Opinel to a standard user, it would be the Opinel cheese knife, you have the ergonomics of the Opinel No10 handle, and size. With french trade style blade shape.

I really want one of those DIY Opinels, in any colour, a bit pricey here though at roughly ~$35 - $40.  :ahhh

I will keep an eye out, there must be one somewhere for a sane price

The NIB ones I have seen here in the US are around $32.  Not sure if Opinel has implemented MAP (as many knife manufacturers have), but that definitely seems to be the going rate.

Expensive for an Opinel, but the other synthetic-synthetic handled Opinels are as well.

I got a wild hair to do some working with leather and made a sheath for my 9. I already see ways to improve it, but it works well as an unobtrusive carry if I am wearing a belt to hang it on.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

   I have honestly forgotten what burgers look like!!! I had a health agreement with the (amazing) wife, one burger a year......I used to be 90% burger......

It's my birthday this month..... maybe my annual burger quoter is coming up...... :gimme:

Wife was right (as always - something I realised right at the start), and lost crazy amount of weight....still 10kg to go really.

Very nice, I made a leather sheath for SAK classic (and a lock pick kit for it too).  I have some leather, I might make something.... thanks for reminding me
