And since Rich asked about the Mullet, here's a shot of it.

I like the look of those Ruikes. It's one of those things that sits on my wishlist in the hopes that the price will drop, but I haven't actually grabbed it yet.

They're $24 on Amazon right now... I got mine for $19.99, but I would have bought it for $24.  It's a pretty nice little tool for the price  :tu:

Day 3

I have no dog, but I have Pumpkin.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

She came to me a little over 4 years ago. I had another cat slip away on a trip to the vet, and put out some live traps, bait, and trail cameras looking for him. In addition to some raccoons, bunnies, possums, and a fox (maybe some distance cousins of Gary's crew), I saw a small cat show up a few times.

Eventually, she got comfortable enough with the food, cages, etc. and on a rainy late March night, I caught her in one. I took her to the vet the next morning to see if she had been chipped or anything, but they were pretty sure she was feral. I asked about getting her fixed and her shots, and they told me a crazy high number. And then handed me the business card for a lady who gets the township to pay for it.

We did a shady handoff in an abandoned k-mart parking lot, and a week or so later I got a call back. The surgery, shots, etc. went fine, but she seemed like she'd be a good house cat. Did I want to keep her instead of letting her go?

Everything had just closed down for the pandemic a week or two before. I was on the verge of breaking up with my girlfriend. My old cat was missing. I was very grateful for the company.

She spent most of the next couple months living under a big arm chair, coming out only to eat and use the litter box (I used one of the trail cams to make sure she was at least coming out at night when it was quiet). But over time, she came out during the day more and more. She didn't want pets, but she'd rub on a stick if I held it out, play with toys a little.

It took about six months, but eventually she came around. By the end of work from home for Covid she was spending most of the day sitting by my feet (giving me a poke if she didn't get pets regularly) and most of the night in bed with me. It might not quite be taming a wild beast, but it was one of the best experiences of my life to watch her slowly come around from a scared little baby to a sweetheart.

She's pretty good with people now. You have to touch her the right way, and she doesn't like to be picked up, but she'll come for some headbutts and a little scratch for most people. My wife will say she's a total daddy's girl though.

But I gotta get some kind of tool or something in here today too, not just the cat. I thought I'd talk a little about a piece of EDC/outdoors gear that we seem to mostly ignore, even though I bet most of us carry them every day: water bottles, canteens, thermoses, etc.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I recently got back from a trip from Seattle, where I forgot to pack a water bottle. After struggling along for a day or two (and looking at the overpriced junk in all the touristy stores) we walked by an Army Navy Surplus. $15 later, I was the owner of this snazzy vintage Czech M60 canteen.

Aluminum body, wool insulation/condensation wrap, leather harness, plastic cap. It dribbles a little if you tip it over, but it gets the job done pretty well. All in all, I'd probably rather carry a Nalgene, but it did alright for the trip, and it's a neat piece of gear.

Pumpkin was reasonably obliging for a shot with it.

Continuing on my imagination the second one is my small 4 way screwdriver prototype in front of one of those gigantic 91mm Victorinox SAks.. All the drivers are in the center when open. They are also locking, and I'm pretty pleased with the mechanism for the locking system. These days the technology has advanced enough, so it is actually possible to make one that satisfied the official ISO hardness requirements for screwdriver tips.

Care to share more pics of your prototype?  Looks pretty cool.

Day 3

Our 80lbs lap dog Kuma taking a liking to my Opinel.  He's a rescue that had Demodex when we rescued him.  It took a while and a lot of meds but his brown fur came in real nice and pretty.  He's real good with people especially kids.  My wife wanted to find out what kind of breed he was so we had him tested with one of those Amazon DNA dog tests.  Turns out he's 1/3 Great Pyrenees, 1/3 Australian Cattle Dog, and 1/3 Siberian.  He's 100% sweetheart though that always watches over the wife and kids.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Day 4
Just a little red, white, and blue to start the day.  Lots of nice posts on Dog Day yesterday.  Considering that summer dog days are generally thought of as oppressive heat, humidity, and general stickiness.  I got lots of cautionary advice from my poor old granny about dog days.  I didn't listen very well however, and the only thing I remember is how one had to be careful during dog days.  According to her, if you got injured during this time it would take forever to heal.
I am making friends with a new computer.  It is my first with SSD.  Sounds like something you would need to get shots for.  I needed an SD slot, but I can always buy an adapter.  Best wishes.  G

Today I happened to be toting a Wenger Handyman, so:
:like: I'll show a couple of Wengers soon.

Here's the Executive on a strangely empty Metropolitan line tube train  :dunno:
Interesting choice of upholstery. I could add that the little streetcar jobbies that shuttle folks around downtown Detroit are pretty neat.

It's a neat piece of gear.

Great stuff from awl, and happy Independence Day!

Day 4

Excuse me while I shamelessly steal ideas from IMR4198 and Fireman... :ninja:

The keychain is appropriately dressed for the occasion.

And here is the red, white, and blue SAK theme, but with 91mm models. The red one is a Hiker, the white reverse cross is a Tinker, and the blue one is a Camper.

Day 4. I thought I'd switch it up a bit with a different kind of multitool. The first one is a picture from the Rhino3D program which I've used for 3D modelling since it was version 1.1 back in 1995 or so. Together with Solidworks, and once in a blue moon some programming, it is possible to make almost any 3D object. (I also had this project with some company some years ago that insisted on using SolidEdge for everything, and that was very comparable to Solidworks). I put a few different view modes on to show off those a bit too.

I stumbled upon the second picture yesterday searching for a file and thought it was a fun one. It is a screengrab from roughly 2016. It was a sketch of a logo for the multitools. The name was short and logo friendly but might not give the best associations? And over time other kind of tools got mixed in, and such a multitool focused logo didn't make sense anymore.

ADAM: Do they have the Fourth of July in England?
TEACHER: Yes. It’s the day after July 3.

I'm quite certain that the correct question should have been " Do they have Independence Day in England?   I don't know if the UK has a day that they celebrated as such but here in the good ol' US of A it's kinda big thing.

Today, in honor of the Founding Fathers I pulled out my  BUCK 110+.   When I was growing up,  almost any large frame lock back knife was called a BUCK.   Never had one back then and as I got older felt they were just too heavy.    The 110+ is light as a feather and sometimes rides along in a pocket on my EDC bag.
