Day 3

Got up early today.  Once upon a time in my little smudge of a town, there was a big pole set up in the middle near the courthouse.  On top of it were four gigantic red painted sirens.  One for each direction.  Then when there was a fire, they started whooping so loud you could hear them for miles.  Then if you were swift enough, you could turn on the local AM radio station to find out the news.  The music would be interrupted by a series of loud beeps, then whoever was working at the station would tell where the fire was.  Visitors who didn't know the local routine probably thought there was an air raid if they happened to be downtown near the full amplitude of those deafening sirens.  Eventually they stopped doing it.  Nobody really missed it, I think.
Things change.  Canned radio programs from who knows where.  Nobody alive working at the station most times.  There used to be a broadcast that told who was admitted to the local hospital.  You could know the nice old man who sold tomatoes was sickly.  Obituary programs sponsored by the local funeral home let you know when it was time to find another tomato vendor.
Judging from the amount and length of emergency vehicle sirens, something terrible was happening near my old farmhouse yestiddy.  No way to know what that was.  Probably just as well.
I was generally dissatisfied with the sharpness of my combo carry Gerber.  I tried my hard Arkansas razor hone on the minimal plain edge to no avail.  Dropped back to a medium grit Arkansas, and quickly got a sharp working edge.  The jags and snags on the serrated portion all had tiny wire edge type points that didn't point all in one direction.  I straightened them out with my ceramic rod that lives in my belt pack.  Might have helped some.  I don't know.  I did open some mail that had been in my box for a couple of days.  Plain edge worked fine.  Serrated did a messy job.  Best wishes.  G

Day 3 of 30

Today decided to carry 2 combo blades PST2 and OHO-GAK, so far needed GAK to open bag of sweets. I may need to sharpen bit serration part on GAK since it didnt perform so great opening bag, i will try to sharpen it later when i have time to do it.

Day 3

Remembered I had this Gerber archived away.  Released it from jail and stoned/stropped it a bit after reading Gary’s story about his Gerber.  Now it opens boxes nicely.  In its “as found” condition, Not sure it would have opened up an airplane as it’s ASEK name implies.  It did a nice job cutting some type of molded cardboard/paper packaging that was used keep glass bottles intact during shipping.

What a cutie! Good for you Aztec!
I think more winter for us in Central Texas just means more rain.  I appreciate the rain but i wouldn't mind a bit more cold.  I hardly to get wear any of my hoodies or jackets.

Day 2

Just mail call duty today unfortunately.  We were tied up half the day picking up a foster-to-adopt furry friend.

Day 3

This is the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert.

This version is manual, with dual thumb studs, GFN handles, and ATS-34 steel.

It has a liner lock, but also an unusual double-locking mechanism designed to prevent the locking liner from moving when engaged.

I believe it originally had a pocket clip, but I got it used and it came to me without one.

Day 2

(Image removed from quote.)

Mini Griptilian again today. One thing I realized today is a lot of companies use the exact same pattern on serrations. I wonder why?

(Image removed from quote.)

Bonus picture of the mini grip being used to slice lemons for lemon bars.

These are called triple point serrations, they are a standard format.... but why, I don't know.  There are different patterns, and I assume that there had been some sort of testing at one time to demonstrate that these have a particular advantage of some sort.  There are other formats that are less common, like the uniform serrations on a Kershaw Leek, which we are seeing in the Challenge

After a good clean put the Opi to work slicing a few things for my lunch. It did an excellent job, the curve of the blade is just right for this kind of task, just as you’d expect from an Opi

Late picture because I'm a night owl nowadays. Picture of the mini grip I'm carrying this month with another common carry of mine, a coldsteel. Just a little funny the size difference between the two. But neither one feels to small or to large.

Day 4
It had to happen.  The promised clipectomy.  The patient came through without a hitch.  Or a clip.  It is still a flipper (sort-of), but isn't a flipper clipper anymore.  The clip looks like it is perched on top of the plastic bag, but it is really inside with the attendant small bolt.  I did mention losing things, right?  On the one-hand-opening front, I think I subconsciously began holding the Gerber differently and now the blade opens with just a single thumb much easier than before.  Either that, or my hands work better since it has been warming up a little.  Handling the EZ Out is much EZier now.  More friendly in use.  Better in the pocket.  The blade pivot is nice and tight, so evidently the clip doesn't play much of a role in retaining it.
  Best wishes.  G

Used my SAK 111mm Trekker to “open” the sharpening compartment on the Gerber ASEK scabbard.  Combo blade was in the closed/safe position while operating the screwdriver.

Day 4

Judging by some of the other posts in this thread, the Opinel No. 08 Outdoor needs no introduction.

However, I’m not nearly as enamored of it as some seem to be.

For one thing, it is a bit small for my hand.  In the standard Opinel line, I find the No. 10 a much better fit than the No. 08.

For another, the handle is a little too slick for my liking,  especially given its size.  I would have preferred some more texture.

Finally, with the shackle opener, it seems like Opinel missed an opportunity to make this knife OHO.  But, given the laws in some places, perhaps that was deliberate.

Now I’m feeling like I should give this Opie some carry time, in order to give it a truly fair evaluation.

Working out in the forests this morning tracing utility lines. Carried the Delica. Used to open a case of water. I do like the deep clip on it.

Carried the 943SBK today. On this one, I replaced the black aluminum scales with black burlap Micarta. Today, it helped with masking windows and prepping for paint. It also helped pen a package this afternoon.
