I've cut a few with one.  They're super cutters!
Day 6

The Imperial Camper Knife didn't do a bad job cutting the cigar in spite of me.

I like that Cody!
Day 6: Two mail-calls.

The Lledo RNLB Garside (Tyne-class Lifeboat) is tough to find in the States, though a few were brought back as tourist trinkets. I paid $2 shipped for this one off eBay from an eBay seller in CO.

I think Garside was the debut. It was produced for Kimberly-Clark (who if I recall, paid for the boat to be built) on behalf of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The box still has a RNLI price tag of GBP 2.50. Over 2-3 years, Lledo did most of the Tyne-class--most of the time, with an ad for the sponsor of the boat on the plinth.

And another package showed up unexpectedly. Long story short, we've had a ton of problems with UPS lately. A neighbor of mine called on his way out from my place, saying he found a package with my name on it--a quarter-mile from my place on an old farm near no address whatsoever. We suspect the owners (my estranged Dad and his second wife I might add) of that property (who without our permission, blocked the driveway on our property with a gate) complained because the UPS guy recently started going through that gate to leave packages on my porch. I've tried to get someone at UPS to get to the bottom of this issue, but so far, nothing's worked.

That package contained some tools I ordered from Caterpillar--drop-shipped through our local dealer. No shipping notification or phone call and I actually checked my CAT account this morning--and it was still saying "processing"--makes me wonder if UPS picked it up on the way out--they're on the same road as the CAT dealer.

Most are rebranded Snap-On, though it appeaers the 213-1983 (6-inch) are actually rebranded Channellock (with exclusive black grips).

If Loop Cutter had the deluxe three layer stainless steel model instead of the single, he would have had some other tools on his Sak-a-like.  Here are the excellent scissors on mine.  This is the usual state of them after you fold them up.  No, they won't cut paper, and the spring has sprung whatever flex it once possessed.  The blade is marked Stainless, and it might be.  The rest of the implements have rust on them.  The stainless steel scales with the black plastic nubs look just fine.  I have cut up some apples with it and a few oranges.  Best wishes, G

Still, there's scissors on knives and tools that cost a lot more that should cut but can't.

 Day 7

Task failed

I needed to open a new bottle of fabric glue. That involved snipping the applicator, snd the instructions on the bottle suggested using scissors.

It turns out that the scissors weren’t really getting a good purchase on the plastic, and to make matters worse it seemed like it wouldn’t snip it squarely.

So then I thought about poking a hole.   :pok: But that proved impossible due to the sheepsfoot configuration of the blade, and the angle at the pokey end being too obtuse.

So I ended up using the awl of a Victorinox Trekker (trying to stay somewhat true to the challenge by not using the Pioneer X, but also recognizing that the tip of that one would not be as good as the cellidor version))

That saw blade reminds me a lot of the Signal saw.  That brew scene looks so good! ☕☕
Thanks.  I love brewing my coffee outside with my twig stoves when the day allows.

Scissors are one of those tools that are so useful when done well and frustrating when they don’t work.  Scissors are also one of those tools it seem most makers can’t do as well as SAK.

Day 6

When I got this LionSteel Jack 2, I had strongly considered the Jack 3 (which adds a corkscrew to the Jack 2) instead.

Normally, it would be an easy call for me to get the tool with more functions assuming it didn’t add much weight or bulk.  However, I was fortunate enough to be able to handle both before buying, and found the corkscrew to be quite obtrusive on the Jack handle.  While I hadn’t had this issue with 91, 85, or 84 mm SAKs, I went ahead and got the Jack 2 over the Jack 3, and haven’t regretted it yet.

DAY4:
Had sadly nothing to do where I would had need to use an Multifunktional Pocket Knife sadly, so maybe no Picture today.., was a lacy Day anyway, I went in the Garden to watch the Bees flying out an in there Hive, check how bad the Situation on the Asian Hornets really is: I saw maybe 2 to 3 European Hornets (you know these giant but quite chilled Wasps , these sound quite dangerous, but they are actually quite kind, as long you are not an Wasp or an Bee.. ,  im still a bit confused: In the USA there are the Yellow Jackets, are these Hornets or Wasps?  They are a lot more aggressive there,
I never had any issues whit them in Europe, but there is now this new Asian Hornet which is a thread for the European Insect because its quite invasive and spread quite fast, and they are an big issue ..

I wonder what would happen if I would have to open a Can in these 30 Days of the Challenge? The Techtool don't have an Can Opener, so I would need to use the Can Opener on my Swisstool,

Or are im already out of the Challenge because I have the Swisstool and the Minichamp the whole time also in my Pocket EDC? , I only used the Nail Cleaner on the Minichamp the last few days,..
Your SAK is only fully yours, when it bites you, or you opend a Trink of your joice whit it
SAKs i have: Huntsman Light (Red Transparent), Workchamp (Black), Wenger EvoGrip S557 (Red), Swisschamp XLT (Red Transparent).. Swisschamp (Blue Transparent) Cybertool L (Blue Celidor (custom scales) , Huntsman (Black Celidor) , Victorinox EvoGrip S557 (Red, but sadly lost in my house somewhere) Victorinox Delemont S17 and S57 ..  , waiting for: Swiza D09 Blue

Day 7

I woke this morning thinking!  Yes, stupid as it sounds, about this challenge. How Victorinox and WENGER made Swiss Army Knife’s, who was first?  How and why the world copied their success, making SCOUT KNIVES, then cheap made look alike flooded the inexpensive market, cheap is as cheap does.  And, the SWISS companies just kept plugging along doing what they do.
Then other knife makers add a bottle opener to a knife handle, is it really a SAK-a-like?

Or, WENGER partnering with BUCK, are Swiss Bucks SAK-a-Likes? Or legit SAKs?
That kind of thinking!

Then found this utensil set, a Christmas gift from a grandson, from school holiday store,  these are all metal construction, can opener on Fork, bottle lifter/screw driver on the spoon, and combo edge knife blade!

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Staying with crossed out Camillus again today. Carries very well, blade cuts and awl’s point is a little flat blade screw driver, or flat micro chisel!  Locks in place by a liner tab just like on TL-29 or Cub Scout knife.

And a bonus picture with utensils fold into handles.   Colors are vibrant! 😜
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Plus there is sturdy pouch to pack these together, for glove box, back pack, lunch pail, desk drawer.
A lot of thought was put into this selection by grandson, as I was traveling a lot when he  purchased this gift.  ☺️

My understanding is that Vic developed the 1890 Soldier and Wenger produced them to spec a few years later. And while Vic is the company that codified the modern scout, I think there's evidence of similar knives (mostly German) predating it. Swissbuck is a "legit" SAK in my book. Wenger made them, Buck just sold them.

Day 7

Touching up the edge on the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I've heard some people prefer a "rougher" edge (lower grit) on their knives, saying it'll keep longer. I don't believe everything I read on the internet, but if y'awl tell me that's how it works I'll buy it.

I came up with a new use for a back-layer Phillips: loosening a very tight knot in a plastic bag.

I tried to download a .pdf of the new Swiza catalog.  I thought I had but instead had a copy of their customization catalog.  Says Customization right on the first page.  Polished tools, matte tools, black tools, some peculiar textured rubbery scales, and other upscale fancy things.  Some are catchy in appearance.  Scales on some are held on with screws.  Many choices for changing the appearance of whatever you order.  Work is supposedly done in-house or by sub-contractors.
Interesting anyway.  Now I will try to find a catalog of standard models.  Best wishes.  G

The rougher edge was preached to me when younger.  We sharpen the blades based on what you are planning to cut with the knife.

If working the garden, cutting sweet corn ears from the stalk you wanted a smooth edge as consumers like that clean cut.  Plus you often returned to the shed after 20 dozen or so was gathered and then you quickly stropped the blade before gathering more bushels.

If cutting more fiborous materials as Pumkin vines as bd ragged edge was beneficial.  Like a serrated blade, it did last awl day, to bad my back did not from bending continuously.   Also, ragged blade work well gather greens for orders.  Never cut to have on the stand, only took orders and timed gathering do that when they said they were going to there, you wanted to be coming out of the patch with their fresh cut greens.   Repeat customers😀

Plus grain sacks cut easier with rough edge as well.

But today, the finer grit is common. If cutting rough material edge roll is your edge dampener, a  c old leather belt hung from the tractor to quickly restore an instantly dull knife.
Did not pay attention to angles back then.  A knife cut it was good, made noise slicing paper good for rough stuff. If quiet or smooth, it would do flesh some damage and not leave a tear.

Carbon blades were only option then as well.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Swiza has really gotten it together. Last time I looked, their line was very small and disorganized, but it's much nicer today. Good for them. Maybe they can step into their old (Wenger's) shoes and give Vic some competition. Or at least some good weird knives. That magnifier/tick remover is very old school Wenger weird. Love it.

Swiza does have one distinctive feature.  A large choice of scale colors on even their standard models.  Here are the choices for a Spartan look alike.  Best wishes.

Day 7: Tried one of mine (I got several in another forum's "POS Exchange" over the years--most of which I passed on to someone else the following year--and about 4 this year).

And well, same results. Scissors suck. I also tried to screw-in a drywall screw to hang artwork--backside was too small, as was the bottle opener for PH2.

You can always just post a picture of your SAK-A-Like sitting on your desk or in your hand.  Many have done that before.

Yellow jackets are a type of wasp.  Hornets are generally bigger and wasps are smaller with a narrow body.  We've had reports of the Asian Hornet here in the US.  They decimate bee colonies.

Day 8

The shackle on my pretty Rough Rider isn't long for this world.  The annoying flipping and flopping must end.  It did come in handy to hang up the camp knife for a photo.
I'm not sure exactly why, but one of my favorite posts on MTo is our friend Sherry making coffee outdoors with one of her little burners.  Sometimes she makes popcorn.  If Fisher is in the photo, so much the better.  I'm sure she has one of those plastic and chrome things with a big glass flask in her house to make coffee.  Might even have one that turns itself on, so she could slide her feet into some slippers and scuff, scuff, scuff her way to the kitchen and pour a hot cup.  Straight out of bed.  There's something that makes me happy about her taking a little metal contraption outside and poking twigs or squirting alcohol in it for outdoor coffee time.
Best wishes.  G
