Where's the fun in pulling the pull tab?
Maybe if there was some kind of golden ticket under the lid? I don't really want to tour a bean factory though

Day 10

I got to thinking about our discussion on screwdrivers.

Back in the day - when I came over to the dark side of Multitools, the first thing to draw me in was having a screwdriver.  I'd been carrying folders for many years - a Buck knock-off, two genuine Bucks, two wood-handled folders that I believe were made on the cheap by Boker, two cheap Jaguars that I shouldn't have gotten, a Cold Steel that served me well for years...
What got me hooked on MTs initially was having a screwdriver that would allow me to preserve the main blade.  And honestly, even young and stupid me had to admit a screwdriver was better at driving screws than a knife was.

So I carried a LM Wave as an EDC for about 5 years... I had my pick of four different flat screwdrivers.  But I eventually discovered the Paradox of Choice.  My LM Wave has a SD that's too thick... one that's too narrow and cams out... one that's too sharp and won't stay put either... and one that's only good for eyeglasses.  The thickest one would be good for prying if it didn't have a 90* tip that gets snagged.

Enter the Swiss Army Knife - Most have just two flatheads, but they're about as versatile as can be.  You don't have to decide which SD to use, you make it work with the one on the bottle opener for the most part.   And there's no trouble with light prying.  Mainly, I think the shorter lever arm gives you much more feedback on the tool itself.  I dare say none of us have ever snapped a SAK bottle opener in two.  I've actually momentarily separated the layers on a SAK with over-levering, I immediately felt it and released the tension before anything bad happened.  Meanwhile, LM plans for broken SDs in advance with their warrantee services.

This Pioneer X will probably be my EDC for the foreseeable future, though the Compact is a frontrunner in this regard.  This screwdriver might be more important to me than Combo tool.  I honestly like the Combo tool better than the opener layer - it makes a much better bottle opener and a good screwdriver to boot - both for flatheads and Phillips.  It can open a can in a pinch, and nostalgia for the claw opener makes me root for it in a head-to-head competition.

But at this stage, my SAK is more than a backup.  As I get used to the weight of the Pioneer X, I'm thinking the opener layer may be worth the trouble.  At least for the next few months?

The Compact was my EDC for many years before the PX was introduced.  I've been carrying the PX since it was released.  Both great knives, can't go wrong either way.

well put!

I used the can opener last week just for fun - first time I've done it in years.  I also go out of my way to use the cap lifter to open bottles that need one.
Cheers Tet  :hatsoff:

I can't say I've used the can opener in anger, yet. Maybe I'll try and find some cans without a ring pull and give it a go  :tu:

Day 9

I used the cap lifter to pry out a nail that was so far in I couldn't get it with the hammer.  I'm building a little tree fort/platform for my girls near our house.  I didn't get a photo but I did get one of my reward for all of that hard work....
:like: I am impressed with your tree-fort building skills (and the all important après Fort action shot  :drink: )

It's even worse when you go to an 84mm.... I like the size of the blades, especially the smaller one.  The openers seem a little unsettling - though I'm sure they work just fine.  (TBH I have never used them for anything other than drivers)

Now one month next year we'll all do a 111mm challenge.  Then you'll really see what a Vic screwdriver can do.   :mn:

Today I was asked (directed  :pok: ) to use the PX to cut some garden twine used to secure a wayward Jasmine plant, planted by Mrs Surge.

I couldn't take an action shot due to running out of suitable appendages (with opposable thumbs that is  )

So here's one of the PX hanging about afterwards instead

Sounds like you got it while the getting was good!

I'm assuming you still get have your work supplied Surge?
I still get to keep the work supplied one but it won't be replaced, unless I use the one I was given by the Missus (but that's not likely to happen)

Mind you, my own one is pretty well used so, it's an option  :dunno:

I love those outdoor shots, like SVL's bonus pic and Surge's hanging in the trees!

EB I know what you mean about the Wave.  I have one (I think it's a Wave+, not sure of the difference). I use the pliers the most, and the blades are quite nice, there's a straight and a serrated, and the file is really good too.  The saw is so-so, it's not nearly as good as my Camper blade, I expected a bit more.  I use scissors a lot, and the scissors on the Wave are tiny and not that great.

Day 10

No moments today of forgetting it was time to use screws instead of the nails I had been using, so I didn't have to pry anything out!  I'm getting a bit redundant I'm afraid, so far today just used the sak to open a beer.  I have had twice as many beers in the last 2 weeks as I had all year up to that point (probably an underestimation).  I hate that that just sounded like my mother!  Good thing this is a Pioneer X challenge and not a Camo one, my SAK may not have been visible!  I thought I was going to be putting the floor on today, but last night I realized I really should think more about the railing.  Tomorrow!

Day 10

Had to switch to the Spirit this morning because I needed a metal saw. I tried to unscrew these carabiners first, but they were rusted and busted, so no way. I cut the first one with the metal saw of the Spirit, and it worked great. Did the second one with a dedicated metal saw for comparison. Of course the later was faster, but it has also 6 times the cutting length of the Spirit’s saw.
I was still impressed with the Spirit’s performance  :tu:

Later I used the PX to open some ingredients for pizza. All fresh and home made

Cheers SVL  although I can't take credit for the garden (that's down to Mrs Surge) I'm just the skivvy  ::)

All of the plants are in pots as we only have a yard. However, it's surrounded by high walls so is a bit of a suntrap and therefore also sheltered from high winds as well  :tu:

That pizza looks like its gonna be great

I read somewhere... on a What did you do with your SAK today thread - and I don't think it was here (because none of you fine people would do such a thing)..

Someone got to a public parking lot too late, after closing, to get their car.  The lot was chained shut, so they proceeded to cut the chain to retrieve their car

So now the lot owner has to buy a new chain, and if there were any other cars in the lot that night they were unprotected.   :-[

Nice uses Sir Vic!

Thanks mate!  We're out in the country, about a 20 min. drive to a town with 50-60K.  It's a pretty big country, even if we all live as far south as we can!

Day 11

Had some good use today. I've tried all kinds of things, but the bottle opener is the best so far at pulling out the staples they attach the bar codes to at the end of the deck boards.  And I lost a blade on my jigsaw, I used the screwdriver to attach to new one.

Day 11

What I did today, and opted not to show you, was use my SAK scissors to open three big packs of bacon that I purchased in bulk.  Then I divided them up into reasonably sized rations and froze them for use over the next several months.

Here's a picture of my morning pick-me-up instead
