Day 7: a lot of use.

I opened up a 1991 Bucklite 422 Ranger. I may end up trading this one. Not as impressed with the handle feel as the first-gen. But, I'm probably keeping it as a backup to the first-gen, as the 422 was the only one with finger grooves--I don't know why it didn't carry over to later Bucklites. I now have most of the Bucklites that retained the standard 112 handle shape.

Looks like I'll be back to my 112LT for some time--both 422s have some pretty bad edges that need to be addressed by Buck.

I used the Dexter Russell net knife to cut some tape and insulation freeze-proofing some cleanouts in our waterline.   I got this a few years ago as a cheap alternative to knives like the Spyderco Jumpmaster and Enuff, and I have to say, I'm impressed with everything but the sheath. The knife is US-made, holds a really good edge, has decent rust resistance, and their serrations are wicked.  The handle also is incredibly slip-resistant. The sheath is weak, and I snapped the belt loop off, so I cut what was left of it off and made it a pocket fixed blade. I'll soon go to something nylon.

It's a brush cutter, insulation knife, rope knife, pruning knife, box cutter, well just about everything.

As you can tell, I use this knife hard. I'm not afraid to loan it to my grandmother, as it's inexpensive to replace, but still takes most rough jobs. I've been thinking about moving to Sanisafe by Dexter to replace my hodge-podge group of old kitchen knives for regular cooking use, as well as picking out a butcher for use as my hunting knife, mainly because I love the steel and handles.

:tu:

I’d have preferred a US made one but they’re impossible to get in Australia without importing one which would cost four or five times as much. The China made ones are about the cost of a pub lunch here so bit of a bargain

That’s what my research has revealed. USA stamped units 2 to 3 times more used, than a new 152 model.
Eyeing a camo handle one with black blade. Or go to local farm store and spend about a healthy pub lunch for one 😜
On auction site, if cheap, it is without sheath and shipping can painful, if a few dollars more a nylon sheath, if a few more then leather  sheath.   Then there are fakes as well.

Those describe handle wood, no info on steel or mention of Schrade.

I have spent yo much time.  Will see!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I feel that if you're not getting a Schrade USA Sharpfinger then you can get any similar knife from any maker because they're all probably made in the same factory in China anyway.  The one Cody picked up seems nice.  I've had a good long look on the auction site and, yes, the older USA Sharpfingers are getting pricey.  They do have a new heritage series that is made in the US but they want about $65 for one of the new heritage series Sharpfingers.  For my money, I would rather get a new regular Sharpfinger for about a 3rd the price, but I'd recommend spending whatever extra for one with the leather sheath.  Make sure to get the leather sheath that has the snap at the bottom and not the one that has the snap towards the end of the handle. In any case, you're all going to be amazed at how good this knife design is.  Happy searching.

:tu: LC and Alan

I went for the one on the left, preferred the look of the moulded leather sheath and from a reputable seller I’ve bought from before.
It would’ve been a bit cheaper to get a synthetic sheath but the leather looked a much better bet

Got a bit of a discount on the advertised price too thanks to eBay plus, so seems good value….looking forward to trying it out

Day 07

Today is this number, I think this came off of a seller on Instagram? No idea to be honest. I did have to hand grind a new bezel into it for a past challenge, as the edge was way too fat to be productive, and I gave the kydex sheath a faux leather covering with sofa fabric, held in place by that small piece of ball chain. I really like this knife, I just wish it was a smidge, like a cm or two longer in the handle.

I knew the handle on the bobtail was longer but the picture makes it look as though the blade is also a little longer, unless that is just from the camera angle. I haven't seen them side by side before.  Thanks.

Pretty sure the last pix should present them correctly, but here is another picture taken for size comparison.  I'd make sure the pix is taken further away(to eliminate close range lens distortion) and keep the phone camera level.  The Bobtail does have a larger blade, and larger handle.

Day 8

Since I was doing a comparison photo for the Brisa Bobtail and Necker, I figured I would do another one for these two--the Mora Garberg and Condor Terrasaur.

Before the Garberg, I think many Mora fans had always wanted a 'full tang' knife from Mora and IIRC, it made quite a buzz when it was first released.  It was quite functional as a full tang knife, but not what I have expected from most of my Mora knives experience, lightweight and well balanced.

Then came the Condor Terrasaur, which is heavily inspired by the Garberg.  To some extent, I think it is an interesting offering.  The fit and finish is no where near Mora level, but it was nearly half the price.  The weight is a lot less while maintaining full tang, the blade stock is slightly thinner(2.83mm vs 3.2mm on Garberg) and balance is better in hand.  To some extent, it is the format I wish Mora Garberg would have presented in.

But would I recommend this over the Garberg?  The answer probably will depend on personal preference--if you have a large size hand, and don't mind a little extra weight or balance biased towards handle, then Garberg is probably a good choice if you don't mind the higher price tag.  If weight and balance is first of higher priorities, or don't mind trading off fit and finish for a lesser price tag, then Condor Terrasaur indeed will be a better choice.

That is a nice comparison.  I’ve read a few reviews of the Garberg, because I was considering it at one point.  It seems many reviewers felt unless you were really planning on hard use that required full tang, the Kansbol would meet most requirements while still being light.

Have you tried making the picture smaller.  Sometimes that helps.  By the way you didn't post a day 5 picture either.
I did try making the picture smaller but it just came up with an error.

As far as Day 5, I must of enjoyed my breakfast so much I forgot to post.

Day  5
The ATK opened the cheese, bacon, and tortillas; while the wife did the cooking

Day 7
Because the one picture didn’t load, I took a glamour shot while out walking

Day 8
ATK opened up a box of some medicine for Fisher.

  At 23:40 last night AlanK offered his insights, at 23:59 EchoTech says he pulled the trigger.  Very shortly after that reviewed my two choice on the big River site and shortly after midnight I too pulled the trigger and a reply received indicated item would delivered by 22:30,  10/08/22!!! :woohoo:

Well they were right, at 12:08, e-mail received, packaged delivered. Same Day🤪

BLJ got used to clip some twine and open a new package of 'dog' treats, but the camera was not at hand.  :dunno:  So, simple portrait shot for me again.

Have to say, the utility style of this Sheepsfoot blade (?) is great to use. Turning out to be a very handy EDC.   :tu:

Day 8, opened a package with the Military Green Mora 511 Basic.

The wrong item showed up.

Believe this to be Raven from the previous iteration of the animated Teen Titans series.  I put my photo through Google Lens--Made by Bandai in 2003, and seems like it is a somewhat rare figure.

This was what I actually ordered. Hoping this gets straightened out, especially given I paid $20 for the pair (after counter-offering the seller's $30 offer), and they aren't easy to find. While Schylling produced the Rodeo Champions line for at least 3  years (2007-2010), they don't show up too often.

Seller says the item was intended for another customer. They at least are paying for the return shipping, but I'll likely have to use my own shipping supplies, as the seller just used a flimsy, thin single-serving popcorn snack box.

The seller said that once they received the item I was supposed to, they'll relist it. But after this snafu, I'm not sure if I will repurchase it.  Both the seller's instances of negative/neutral feedback were due to the wrong items sent. What is also annoying is that the items I bought were the only ones I found available for sale of their type.

Western 66
Day 8

It is GA1dad’s fault,

Who?,,,, Little ol' me??

Who knew this would turn into the Sharpfinger challenge?  :ahhh

Hmm,,, that would be a good looking badge for a future challenge.  :pok: Looks like we Sharpfinger owners are growing in number recently.

This is kind of awkward now, as I mixed it up and carried a Western today,,,  Thought I might carry a Western this whole week.

My daughter wanted to make a wooden staff for her Halloween costume. She went out in the woods and picked a branch, then asked if I could skin the bark off. Since the branch had been dead a while, the Western 66 made easy work of it.

Actually the Western is better suited for skinning a tree branch, and whittling the top there for a more comfortable hand hold!

Day 08

Now that 2 members have purchased Schrade Sharpfingers I think my work here is done.

Therefore, I also carried something different today.  The Mora Eldris accompanied me to dine at a new Japanese restaurant this evening.  Their grilled teriyaki squid was tasty but the large pieces needed to be cut into bite sized morsels.  It was kind of hard to cut with the provided tableware (chopsticks). The Eldris was discretely removed from my pocket and it slipped through the tough squid with no more effort than if I was cutting through the foam on my beer. :tu:

My bad!!! For the record,,, I am thinking about carrying it again for the final week of the challenge. It really is a fine feeling knife. Strong backbone, yet a very precise  tip. I was surprised how many compliments it got from coworkers last week. It is indeed a classic!

My Day 8 continues,

Searched for fresh whole chicken (fryer size), no luck. A few whole frozen, but roasting size.

One butcher told me, “ We make more $ cutting them up, people want wings, 4 per bird, then dice up the breast, 32 boneless wing pieces per bird.  Then people pay more for thighs, skinned and bones removed”. They ripping folkes off.”  I went to the volunteer chicken bbq, with prepaid ticket, “Out of Chicken Dinners”, for 4$s more I can get a half slab of ribs??  WT??LL.
Can not catch a break.
I did locate a package of Thighs with bone and skin on, hope to grill up Sunday and enjoy!!!

In the meantime, other than slicing some tape on a envelope and on a Schrade carton my El Mora saw no addition action.

Since I was doing a comparison photo for the Brisa Bobtail and Necker, I figured I would do another one for these two--the Mora Garberg and Condor Terrasaur.
Probably the only thing I dislike about the Garberg is its dinky lanyard hole. It's a struggle to get 275 paracord through that hole. The Terrasaur could be a worthwhile pick-up, even though I don't believe I've ever seen a Condor sheath that I liked.

Hope those new Sharpfingers work out well. I could take one of two routes if I decide to get my hands on one: find the best American one I could, or find a new old stock blade and add handles and sheath later. Good thing I'm broke. :D
