Day 25
It's time for The Castaway portion of the challenge whereby I determine if the tool I'm using could prevent me from starving or dying of thirst by opening a coconut if I found myself stranded on an island like Tom Hanks in the movie Castaway.

First I used the knife to top the coconut and cut the shell into sections so I could pull them off.  The knife blade on the MP600 was a little awkward to use.  I found myself pushing the lock release with my thumb every time I'd bear down hard on the knife, but the design of the MP600 means that there was no way for the knife to close on my hand because if it closed it would have hit the other handle and not my hand.  The partial serrations did work very well cutting through the coconut fibers.

Second, lacking an awl, I used the small flat driver to bore holes into a couple of the coconut's eyes.  The coconut water did not want to pour freely from the small holes but I was able to suck it out.  Coconut water is loaded with electrolytes and it was very refreshing.

Third step was to crack the coconut in half to get to the meat inside the shell.  I used the closed MP600 to tap the coconut around its perimeter until it cracked.  Success!  You won't starve or die of thirst with the MP600 to open your coconuts.
:like: awlways enjoy seeing this test :tu:

Day 25

Package opening. Inside was a new-to-me Marlboro Outdoorsman. It needs a good cleaning.

I'd been looking for a 91mm Woodsman (Explorer + wood saw), but no luck finding one. The Outdoorsman is the same, just adding the fish scaler (and I like having the rulers on the fish scaler). Close enough!

I think I'll put some Plus scales on it. Just need to decide on the color. Might make this my first yellow SAK. Stayglow yellow would be cool, but I haven't seen those scales for sale anywhere.

Daredevil Day 26:  The Swiss+Tech showed its superiority to Victorinox today.  I was replacing scales on a Deluxe Tinker, and I normally use a small SAK blade top pop off scales.  Not today.  It seemed that a stiffer blade was called for, and Swiss+Tech did the job in no time.  I'd swear I heard it say, "Take that, you pompous Vic!

Day 26

Used Wetols to liberate a few new knives and parts.

The new black micarta Case is pretty good, the satin finish on the blades hide any imperfections/blade rub quite well, and the overall fit and finish is decent.  The Pocket worn is the 20th anniversary rendition, but the F&F is all over the place, gaps, poor rivets, play, proud spring when blades are opened...as if it is trying to reminds me the tango relationship with Case, one step forward, two steps back.

The flytanium Ti scales on PM2 fits like a glove.  I always wanted to try them, and now I know what the rave is all about.  It does turn the PM2 into something completely different, and I like it.

That is lovely  :like: :tu:
Day 25:

Opened a new utility knife for my electronics toolkit (I always keep 1X electricians knife and 1X utility knife in my larger kits)

The Stanley 99E is a disappointment, when compared to my vintage 10-099s. I don't know if the "E" stands for "Economy" or not, but it seems very poorly made compared to any of the several around here (some older than the 1970s, others not 10 years old). The leaf spring that locks the blade in place is what worries me. It is much softer than that on any of my others. I have an (imported, sadly) WorkPro in my main toolbox that cost $2 less, but is a thousand times better. I prefer folding for quick blade changes and a safer lock, but I like the 99's ergonomics.  The plastic lock in my hand-me-down 10-049 recently broke due to age (it's an original chrome-plated model); but I"m replacing it with a Christy. I usually sharpened the blade instead of replacing it, and the Christy has no plastic whatsoever and is both smaller and slimmer. It will also likely replace this Stanley, as I can lock the blade in several positions on the Christy as well.

(Image removed from quote.)

Cut tape:

The shower door in the master bathroom won't stay closed. It is a combination of a warped frame and the magnetic strip going bad. I usually use a short piece of clear Gorilla Tape along the top when I'm in there to keep the door shut and water out of the floor, while still being easy to open.  I need to get around to measuring that strip and buying and installing a new one.  The problem is that you have to take it apart to do so, that's why ti's not been done.

(Image removed from quote.)

Go on, you know you want to use the Swiza to repair the shower... :pok:

They don't like it up 'em!

Sad that a 20th Anniversary knife did not have good quality control.  I would expect better, especially on a special edition.

Out of curiosity did you try warming the scales, by putting the SAK in hot water, before prying.  It usually works well for me.

Day 26

I've been trying all month to find a use for the "Universal Wrench" on the Evolution S557. With the challenge end coming up soon, I decided to try a couple of random things:

- Bolts holding the license plate to my car: Too big for the jaws of the Universal Wrench.

- Hex-head screws holding my gutters together: Jaws fit on them, but with the wrench being in the middle of a 5-layer SAK, I couldn't get the Universal Wrench flush enough with the screw head to get any grip on it.

- Some of the bolts holding the garage door track together: Too big for the Universal Wrench.

So, in summary, I don't know what universe the "Universal Wrench" is made for, but it isn't mine. Leaving it as a large useless piece of metal in the middle of the S557.

If any of you out there have positive experiences with the Wenger Universal Wrench, I'd love to hear about them. Somebody at Wenger must have thought it would be useful or Wenger wouldn't have added it to several SAKs and Victorinox wouldn't have kept it in the Delemont line.

Update on Day 25:

I did almost have an additional use last night...

I got a splinter in my finger and thought the tweezers and the pin would be perfect. But I needed the mag glass from my Deluxe Explorer (Explorer + pliers mod) to see the splinter, so ended up using its tweezers and pin instead. Now if only the S557 had a mag glass instead of the wrench...

Placement of a tool does matter. I believe that RP found that the can opener for some MTs were functionally useless due to their placement in the MT. It seems that no one tested the Universal Wrench in real world situations.

Not much use today. I did use the TripSaver to cut a piece of Romex electrical cable, which reminded me of how unsuited the pliers are for that task.
