Placement of a tool does matter. I believe that RP found that the can opener for some MTs were functionally useless due to their placement in the MT. It seems that no one tested the Universal Wrench in real world situations.
You're so right about placement, Adam.

I'm thinking that two things came into play with location of the wrench in the middle of the SAK:
- I've heard that the wrench is good for bicycle repairs. I don't ride so can't say. Maybe there are a lot of bolts on a bike that aren't flush with the surface they're in?
- Many people complain about the Vic inline Phillips being off center. With the wrench in the center, so is the Wenger inline Phillips.
SAKs:
58mm: Bijou (3), Classic SD (7), Mini Champ Plus (mod), Alox Classic SD, Rambler (3), Companion
65mm: Wenger Esquire
74mm: Executive (2)
85mm: Traveler, Delemont S10, Bass
91mm: Champion "c", Swiss Champ (4), Explorer (3), Deluxe Tinker, Huntsman, Serrated Spartan/Weekender, Explorer Plus, Deluxe Explorer Plus (mod), Outdoorsman Plus, Champion "a", Champion Plus, Timekeeper Alarm, Golfer
93mm: Pioneer Alox

Day 27

More opening of dog food today…as I’ve said before, if there’s one thing this challenge has taught me is I use a knife every day, other tools much less…but still feel happier having them nearby

Have enjoyed the Hammerhead, fine around home which having been in lockdown now for 9 weeks is the only place I’ve been, but couldn’t see me edc’ing it

yup. Look at this Grand Harvest K2 for example. The can opener is so far to the right, that it cannot engage on the rim and function.

Day 26
The Minimaster helped to breakdown some boxes.  The small driver has a small and narrow enough end that it cuts through packing tape pretty well, saving the blade.  Afterward, it did a nice job opening a beer

I've got to ask - how are you carrying the Hammerhead around? Did it come with a custom belt sheath or something? A tool belt hammer holder? I can't believe you'd keep it in your pocket.

It comes with its own sheath Steve, can be belt carried vertically or horizontally

For 9 weeks, so since well before the challenge, I’ve been in lockdown.
Apart from a weekly trip to Coles (supermarket) I’ve only left the house to walk Coco, so haven’t actually carried it all :ahhh

Out of curiosity did you try warming the scales, by putting the SAK in hot water, before prying.  It usually works well for me.

:o I used to smash windows, pry doors, cut holes in roofs, and tear cars apart with hydraulic tools, so that's what I did with the SAK.  I'm the guy you call for demolition work, not fine carpentry.

Depends who you speak to as to how genuine the pieces are, but it is why, as well as buying one, I picked a little fleck off a stretch of wall at one point as well!

:like: We want a pic' of the steak  :pok: That is lovely  :like: :tu: Go on, you know you want to use the Swiza to repair the shower... :pok:

Errr...that was Day 25, I wouldn't be doing a good job if anything is still left for the pix.  There's only one movie playing when the steak is on the table--Gone in 60 seconds. :D

Great advice, and I too learned that it doesn't have to be boiling hot, just 70C is enough to do the job. :tu:

DAY 26

Another not appropriate photo taking day (see yesterday)
However, Mrs Surge advised me that her nail varnish warpaint storage device need attention  :twak:
Wow, that's epic! :o :o :o

Day 26

I've been trying all month to find a use for the "Universal Wrench" on the Evolution S557. With the challenge end coming up soon, I decided to try a couple of random things:

- Bolts holding the license plate to my car: Too big for the jaws of the Universal Wrench.

- Hex-head screws holding my gutters together: Jaws fit on them, but with the wrench being in the middle of a 5-layer SAK, I couldn't get the Universal Wrench flush enough with the screw head to get any grip on it.

- Some of the bolts holding the garage door track together: Too big for the Universal Wrench.

So, in summary, I don't know what universe the "Universal Wrench" is made for, but it isn't mine. Leaving it as a large useless piece of metal in the middle of the S557.

If any of you out there have positive experiences with the Wenger Universal Wrench, I'd love to hear about them. Somebody at Wenger must have thought it would be useful or Wenger wouldn't have added it to several SAKs and Victorinox wouldn't have kept it in the Delemont line.

Update on Day 25:

I did almost have an additional use last night...

I got a splinter in my finger and thought the tweezers and the pin would be perfect. But I needed the mag glass from my Deluxe Explorer (Explorer + pliers mod) to see the splinter, so ended up using its tweezers and pin instead. Now if only the S557 had a mag glass instead of the wrench...

I kinda do like the idea of having a 'wrench' in a SAK, but placing it in the middle layer does take away most potential use.  Bummer.

- Many people complain about the Vic inline Phillips being off center. With the wrench in the center, so is the Wenger inline Phillips.

Off center phillips could be a pain to use, but same story goes for most MT, where the phillips is located inside one of the handles.  Larger the MT, more lopsided it could be.  Wetols have the exact problem, and being so chunky and heavy at the same time, I am sure I could have been faster if I took the bit off and just rotate it on loose screw by fingers.

yup. Look at this Grand Harvest K2 for example. The can opener is so far to the right, that it cannot engage on the rim and function.

Epic fail...one look at this is all you need to know whether a tool company is here to stay or just a one-hit wonder.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/toughbuilt-modular-hammer-loop_p5820995
I never did associate the Hammerhead with apocalypse prepping, but now that you mentioned it, it might just as well be the most popular MT on TWD. >:D

Btw, which season are you watching in right now?  I binge watched it a year ago up until Season 7 or 8(IIRC) and need a break from it.  One TWD line that pop into my head, as this challenge is coming to a close soon, is "Dolor hic tibi proderit olim"  (rough translation: “This pain will be useful to you someday.”)

Daredevil Day 26:  The Swiss+Tech showed its superiority to Victorinox today.  I was replacing scales on a Deluxe Tinker, and I normally use a small SAK blade top pop off scales.  Not today.  It seemed that a stiffer blade was called for, and Swiss+Tech did the job in no time.  I'd swear I heard it say, "Take that, you pompous Vic!

Day 26

(Image removed from quote.)

Used Wetols to liberate a few new knives and parts.

The new black micarta Case is pretty good, the satin finish on the blades hide any imperfections/blade rub quite well, and the overall fit and finish is decent.  The Pocket worn is the 20th anniversary rendition, but the F&F is all over the place, gaps, poor rivets, play, proud spring when blades are opened...as if it is trying to reminds me the tango relationship with Case, one step forward, two steps back.

The flytanium Ti scales on PM2 fits like a glove.  I always wanted to try them, and now I know what the rave is all about.  It does turn the PM2 into something completely different, and I like it.

i've been planning on re-sharpening the chisel for some time, and today i finally put a descent edge on it,using a coarse lansky stone, then a medium Lansky stone.

Day 26

Not much use today. I did use the TripSaver to cut a piece of Romex electrical cable, which reminded me of how unsuited the pliers are for that task.
