I tend to agree.
If a bottle of wine needs opening, it's usually urgent.
A loose Phillips can (almost) always wait.
 :tu:

If a SAK has an opener layer, it will handle most Phillips screws pretty well without the need for the back side Phillips.

Day 23

Some smurfty cold weather (0 Fahrenheit) for me today...we need a barfing emoji. Here's a little combo tool/dedicated openers in an attempt to make it better. I decided to give the Bantam a little pocket time.

Day 22 (late)

I bought a bunch of these mini Pilots as I thought they would be a good inexpensive pen to have stashed in various bags and pouches. They are decent enough, but as I discovered after I bought them, Pilot does not sell refills for these. That makes them throwaway items, which is bogus. I won’t be getting any more.

 Day 23

Today’s job was removing an old unwanted wood burner from our house.

This turned out to be a hard job as well as a very dirty one. The thing was made of thick slabs of cast iron and I soon realised the only way I would be able to get it out was to take it apart and remove it in pieces. The whole thing must have weighed north of 150kg / 300lb. In addition I think it had been in place for a good 40 years, and every nook and crevice of it was packed with ash and soot.

The state of the fasteners was not ideal:

Some were not only rusted but had deformed heads that required the socket to be bashed on with a hammer.

Apparently the mechanism of my Wera Zyklop ratchet is strong enough to shear off a rusted bolt:

At one point I thought I was going to use this, as none of my metric hex bits seemed to fit:

but it turned out it was a 4mm fastener that was just clogged up with crud.

When I had finally got out all of the bolts, apart from the ones that snapped, the damn thing still did not want to come apart. Being a man of great finesse, I started hitting it with a very large hammer.  At this point it became apparent that as well as being bolted together, the main pieces were also cemented with…some kind of smurfing cement. The hammer did the job, but fragments of cement went everywhere.  I had put down some plastic on the floor, but as usual the mess extended beyond the area of the plastic.

Satisfyingly I prevailed. My enemy lies vanquished in many pieces in my back yard, I have cleaned up the room, showered and will shortly have a glass of wine.

Cheers!

ps I guess my black item in all this is the Wera ratchet. Unless my hands count.

January here is often characterized by low pressure fronts and high winds, which results in rather mild weather (25-40F). But not this year. It's like a cold desert here atm. Clear skies, absolutely no precipitation and 30 to -5F for the whole of January so far. Not so cold on the thermometer this week, but with the some brisky winds adding to the equation those 15-20Fs turns bone chilling.

After all of that effort I would say your hands probably count, and though not pictured probably your clothes and arms as well.

Definitely earned that wine.

With all this black cary for the month on the 25th, show it with something that provides some light.  Whether flashlight, lamp, lighter, match, or even some sunshine if you have nothing else.

Yeah, I was dirty as hell. Clothes went straight in the machine. I really enjoyed that shower.

A little grape-based muscle relaxant is certainly a good idea after a strenuous job. It remains to be seen how stiff I am today, when I haul myself out of bed in a while.

A fine philosophy. If the screwdriving job is too much to be handled by the can opener, I would far rather use a proper screwdriver / bit driver than the SAK Phillips anyway.

Of course it helps that I am always carrying a bit driving setup in my pocket.

The Pilot G-2 is one of my favorite inexpensive pens. But as the Mini is not refillable, I'll skip it.

Props to Gerber for making an actual bladeless multi for me to leave in my work desk.
I prefer my multis with blade, but having the bladeless option is nice just in case circumstances dictate going that route.

Used the Imperial soddy to spread cream cheese on a bagel.
That looks like it may be cream cheese with lox. Am I even close?

^. I like EQUAL end models.  Your IMPERIAL looks good, a three blade appears fashioned as a cattleman.

Zero temp this morning, now 7°F with snow expected around 7PM tonight.

Wind chill the past couple days, sends a shock h th o the bio-system when outside. Body revolts.

Day 24

I had this spork/whistle combo when I did the Sporkman challenge, but couldn't locate it at the time. So here it is.

Benchmade automatic. I was looking forward to carrying this for Soldier On, until I saw the rule that said only Swiss made would be allowed. Not only does it have an NSN; according to what I read it wasn't even available on the civilian market. Now discontinued. I used to EDC it as long as I wasn't going into TN, where it was a felony to even possess.

UTG Bugbuster. Because it's black and I just got it. I plan to put it on my Crosman 362 multi-pump air rifle, when I find the steel breech I bought for it. The Bugbuster series are popular among airgunners because the objective lens adjusts down to 3 meters.
